Pleasant weather expected for Memorial Day weekend

A mix of sun and clouds with mild to warm temperatures should hold out through most of the holiday weekend.

However, two relatively weak low pressure systems are due in tomorrow afternoon and early Monday. Gusty winds are possible from the second system on Monday.

Higher air pressure has moved into the region in the past few days, but forecasters said the pattern is going to flatten out, exposing the region to the low pressure systems.

Today should be the warmest of the period with a high of 80 expected in Spokane under partly sunny skies. Increasing clouds will be seen from an approaching low.

Those weather systems are not likely to bring any large amounts of rain or wind, although showers near the mountains could be heavy at times. Wind gusts could exceed 25 mph on Monday.

Highs will fall back to the lower to middle 70s in Spokane Friday through Monday.

North Idaho will generally be a few degrees cooler than Spokane with more cloud cover and greater chances of showers from the two lows while the Columbia Basin stays warmer and drier.

Friday is forecast to be cloudy with a chance of showers while Saturday rebounds to mostly sunny. Sunday and Monday should be partly sunny as a second low pressure system brings clouds with it.

Spokane has a 30 percent chance of showers on Friday.

Coeur d’Alene has a 40 percent chance of showers Friday while Sandpoint and Colville have a 50 percent chance of showers.

By comparison, Moses Lake has only a 20 percent chance of showers Friday.

A 30 percent chance of showers returns across much of the region on Sunday night and Monday. Dry air in place over the region should blunt the risk of rain on Monday.

“This will not be a washout by any means, but many locations within the mountain zones will be dodging showers from time to time,” forecasters said of the Sunday night and Monday system.

Lows through the period will be in the upper 40s and low 50s.
