Hockey

Nine Spokane area youth players, ranging in age from 9 to 20, received more than $3,000 in grants this fall from the Nels Venerus Hockey Scholarship Foundation, the non-profit organization announced.

The foundation was created by Venerus, a former Spokane senior player and area youth coach, before he died in 2011. His goal was to establish a fund that would provide assistance to young area players and their families in times of financial hardship and allow them to continue playing.

During the 2013-14 season, the first year the foundation awarded grants, it gave out more than $5,000, noted Jim Ewers, president of the Spokane American Youth Hockey Association and a director of the Venerus foundation.
