Bow reaps opportunitySwift Current’s Landon Bow paid his dues for two years, playing behind the Broncos’ No. 1 goaltender, Eetu Laurikainen. Given a shot this season to be the team’s top goalie, the 19-year-old Bow hasn’t wasted the opportunity. Bow leads all league starters in shutouts (four) and save percentage (.931) and ranks fifth in goals-against average (2.30). “You never grow up saying, ‘I want to be a backup goalie.’ You always want to be the starter,” Bow told Greg Harder of the Regina Leader-Post after last Saturday’s 2-1 shootout loss to the Pats. “It has been working out so far and I’m really enjoying it.” Bow was named the Canadian Hockey League’s Goaltender of the Week.
Around the leagueMoose Jaw snapped a five-game losing streak last Saturday with a 2-1 victory over the visiting Calgary Hitmen. Warriors goalie Zach Sawchenko made 20 saves and lost his shutout bid with 2:50 left. “We haven’t had much to smile about in a while,” Sawchenko told Katie Brickman of the Moose Jaw Times-Herald. … Prince Albert defenseman Josh Morrissey was named WHL Player of the Week after recording three goals and three assists as the Raiders went 3-1-0-0. The 19-year-old, the Raiders’ first-round pick in the 2010 bantam draft, has five goals and six assists in 12 games this season. … Kootenay Ice forward Sam Reinhart has been named captain for Team WHL when it competes against Team Russia at the Subway Super Series. Reinhart was selected by the Buffalo Sabres with the second overall pick in this year’s NHL Draft. Series games are set for Monday at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and Tuesday at Brandon, Manitoba.
