Whitworth senior Micheal Ramos earned Northwest Conference Offensive Player of the Year, senior Matt Bray earned NWC Defensive Player of the Year, and the Pirates’ men’s soccer team continued its successful season with eight individuals earning postseason recognition by the conference.

Ramos, a University High graduate, led the conference with 12 assists. Ramos and Bray, of Ferris High, were joined by junior midfielder Sam Engle as All-NWC first-team selections.

Spencer Wolfe, Colin Shockman (Mead), Karl Muelheims (St. George’s) and Rylan Berriman all earned second-team honors. Samual Jarrett earned honorable mention consideration.

Football

Washington State senior linebacker Cyrus Coen has been nominated for the Burlsworth Trophy, which is awarded at the end of each season to the most outstanding player that began his career as a walk-on.

Coen has started all nine games in which he’s played this season, making 53 tackles.

He became the starting linebacker in 2012, one year after walking on at WSU, and earned All-Pac-12 honorable mention honors. The award is in its fifth year and is named for Brandon Burlsworth, who walked on at Arkansas and became an All-American offensive lineman.
