Arts and crafts fair joins MAC’s Super Saturday festivities

New at Yuletide, the annual fine arts and crafts fair that starts today: Hats.

But they’re not just hats, said the Spokane Art School’s office manager, Jodi Davis, who’s running the show. They’re hand-felted hats of art.

Milliner Ingrid Ostheller is among new artists who’ll offer their work for sale at the school’s biggest fundraiser of the year, held at the Northwest Museum on Arts and Culture in Browne’s Addition – and in conjunction with the museum’s monthly Super Saturday event.

“Her work is really exceptionally beautiful,” Davis said.

She’ll join potters, painters, photographers, glass and fiber artists and others at the three-day event. Twenty-two local artists in all were selected for the fair from a record number of applicants, Davis said.

Among returning favorites: Jeweler Kris Howell, who combines stone and metal, and woodworker Don Barron, whose inlaid boxes have repeatedly netted him the show’s people’s choice award.

Yuletide, in its 35th year, typically draws hundreds of people. It benefits education programs at the school, which offers art classes for children and adults. The school moved recently into new headquarters at 809 W. Garland Ave.

The MAC is offering free admission to its galleries throughout the event and plans music and art demonstrations.

Artist Judy Patterson will construct a “fabric painting” and bring supplies for participants to experiment with, too, said the museum’s Katie Staib.

In addition, the museum’s historic Campbell House will offer free admission, with guided tours starting hourly from noon to 3 p.m. today and Sunday and an open house from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday.
