Fall signing period: Eagles ink basketball players with Australian ties

The Eastern Washington men’s basketball program increased its ties to Australia with its letters-of-intent signings announced Thursday.

Six-foot-2 point guard Michael Wearne is from the Melbourne area, and 6-7 Jesse Hunt from Sir Francis Drake High School in the Bay Area, was born in Australia where his father played professional basketball.

There are already three Australians on the roster: Venky Jois, Daniel Hill and Felix Von Hofe.

Wearne played on the U18 Victoria Metropolitan team which won the Australia National Championship. Hunt led his high school team to a runner-up state finish in California.

• Shooting guard Tyler Brimhall, of Logan (Utah) High School, has signed with the Idaho men’s basketball program.

Brimhall averaged 17 points and 5.6 rebounds as a junior.

He was a second-team all-state selection by the Deseret News and Salt Lake Tribune.

Volleyball

Five players have signed letters of intent with Washington State.

Those players are: Haley DeSales, a 6-foot outside hitter from Pasadena, California; Ella Lajos, a 6-3 middle blocker from San Jose, California; Claire Martin, a 6-4 middle blocker from Bremerton; Taylor Mims a 6-3 middle blocker from Billings; and McKenna Woodford, a 6-4 outside hitter from Chandler, Arizona.

Swimming

Four swimmers have signed with Washington State. They are Ciera Kelly (Juneau, Alaska), Linnea Lindberg (Lidingö, Sweden), Penny Nichols (Phoenix) and Taylor Shewchuk (Scottsdale, Arizona).

Track and field

Olivia Ellis, a second-team All-Greater Spokane League selection in the 400 meters, signed a letter of intent with the University of Montana.
