Newport man dies in Pend Oreille County crash

A 65-year-old Newport resident died Friday after his pickup struck a tree in Pend Oreille County, the Washington State Patrol reported. The man, whose name was not released pending notification of relatives, was driving north on Deeter Road just north of Deer Valley Road just before 5 p.m. when his 2012 Chevy Colorado left the road at a curve and struck a tree, WSP said. The location is about 11 miles west of Newport. The man was wearing a seat belt. WSP said the crash was caused by speeding. \
