Obituary: Bakken, Dorothy L.

Age 94

BAKKEN, Dorothy L. Dorothy Lillian Bakken, born October 29, 1920 in Rapid City, SD, died November 11, 2014 at the age of 94.

She was preceded in death in 2011 by her husband of 70 years, Richard L. Bakken.

As a child, Dorothy was an avid swimmer and high diver, plus played the Bass in her school band.

During her working years, while raising four children, she was employed as an executive secretary for the Phillips Petroleum Division Office in Spokane and was a member of the company bowling team.

Dorothy was an expert seamstress, as well as an artist both in water color and oil paintings.

In her 50’s, along with her husband “Dick” she learned to water ski, snow ski, and ride motorcycles.

In her later years, she kept active walking on her treadmill and on the inside track at Riverview with many friends.

Dorothy loved the Lord and promoted and read daily the devotional book, “Jesus Calling,” as well as her Bible.

She attended Zion Lutheran Church regularly for over 60 years with her husband and family, as well as the Riverview Chapel Sunday evening service.

She had recently transferred her membership to St. Luke’s Lutheran Church.

Dorothy was fiercely independent, still driving herself to the beauty shop and malls until nearly age 94.

Her recent 94th birthday celebration filled a room with over 50 friends she touched and inspired.

She is survived by her son, Dick Bakken, of Bisbee, AZ; and daughters, Mary Brodhun of Port Angeles, WA, and Sally Bakken and Debby MacKenzie of Spokane, WA; as well as seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Special KUDOS from Dorothy’s family and friends goes to Riverview Care Center who went above and beyond the call of duty to insure the care and comfort of our beloved mother and us, her family.

Dorothy will live on in the memories and hearts of all of the lives she touched and will be greatly missed.

A Celebration Of Dorothy’s Life will be held at the Riverview Terrace Chapel, 1801 E. Upriver Drive, Spokane, WA 99207 on Saturday, November 22, 2014 at 2:00pm officiated by Pastor Gary Moore.

Guests are invited to a reception in the Riverview Rec Room following the service.
