Obituary: Smith, Barbara Joann (Lewis)

Age 77

SMITH, Barbara JoAnn (Lewis) (Age 77) It is with heavy heart we share the sad news of the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother on November 15, 2014.

Barbara was born May 7, 1937 in Spokane to Myrle and Hazel (Halsey) Lewis.

After graduating as a Registered Nurse from the Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in Spokane, she was a member of Spokane’s original open-heart surgery team.

Her 42 year career included work at Mary Bridge, and in private practice (Pediatrics).

Barbara married Robert Smith in 1962.

Over the years, until Bob’s death in 2012 they enjoyed salmon fishing and traveling in their motor home throughout the US visiting family and friends.

They also enjoyed spending time at their river property near White Pass.

Bob and Barbara raised two children: Sally (Dale) Seiber of Papillion, NE, and Doug (Pamula) of Puyallup.

They also had four grandchildren: Kristen and Kellie of NE, and Quin and Talon of Puyallup.

She also has two brothers, Dwayne (Patty) Lewis of Lake Stevens, WA, and James (Carol) Lewis of Mead, WA; and a niece, two nephews and extended family.

Barbara had a passion for music and was an accomplished musician, serving as a church organist for over 50 years and directing the handbell choir for many years.

She was an active member of Epworth-LeSourd UMC in Tacoma, WA, and also served many years as volunteer for Campfire Girls.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Epworth LeSourd UMC on Saturday, December 13, 2014 at 1:00 pm, with reception to follow.

The church is located at 710 South Anderson Street in Tacoma.

Another celebration will be held in Kettle Falls, WA in the spring.

Much love and thanks to Seibers, Trenberths, Dr. Wadsworth, Maiken, Dena and the crew.

Memorials may be directed to Epworth LeSourd UMC or the American Cancer Society.
