Area roundup: Whitworth runs away from Redlands for 80-61 basketball win

Christian Jurlina scored 26 points, and the Whitworth men’s basketball team used an 18-0 run to pull away from Redlands, defeating the Bulldogs 80-61 in a nonconference game at Redlands, California on Wednesday night.

Jurlina added five rebounds and four assists, and Matt Staudacher and Spokane native, Forrest Baker, each contributed 13 points for the Pirates (2-2).

The Pirates are spending the Thanksgiving weekend in California.

Whitworth will face Caltech in Pasadena on Saturday.

Volleyball

Katy Beals had 29 assists, Krista Vansant added 21 kills and 10 digs and No. 5 Washington defeated No. 1 Stanford 25-18, 25-21, 23-25, 25-20 in a Pac-12 match in Seattle.

The loss was Stanford’s first conference loss of the season, and pushed the Huskies (28-2, 17-2) one match closer in the standings, with one match remaining.

Tia Scambray added 12 kills and 11 digs for Washington.

Stanford (28-1, 18-1) was led by 14 kills from Jordan Burgess.

• Behind 14 kills from Christina Higgins, California (10-19, 2-17) swept Washington State 25-23, 25-23, 25-22 in a Pac-12 match at Pullman.

Kyra Holt led the Cougars (10-21, 1-18) with 10 kills, and Chelsey Bettinson added nine kills and four blocks.

Washington State finishes up the regular season at home on Friday with a match against No. 5 Washington (28-2, 17-2).

The Cougars will be celebrating four seniors on Senior Night.
