Huskies hold back 49ers at Wooden

Washington to play UTEP in title game

FULLERTON, Calif. – Nigel Williams-Goss scored 21 points and dished out a tournament-record 12 assists to lead Washington to 80-70 victory over Long Beach State in the semifinal game of the Wooden Legacy tournament on Friday night.

The Huskies advance to the championship game on Sunday against UTEP, which defeated Xavier on Friday.

Down 54-45, Washington went on a 13-3 run and took a 58-57 lead following a free throw by Mike Anderson with 8:26 to play.

Andrew Andrews and Anderson hit key baskets down the stretch and the Huskies held the 49ers to one basket over the final 5 minutes of play.

Andrews scored 16 points and Robert Upshaw added 12 for the Huskies (5-0).

Mike Caffey scored 18 points for the 49ers (3-4).

UTEP 77, Xavier 73: C.J. Cooper scored 22 points and Vince Hunter added 12 rebounds as the Miners held on in the final seconds to defeat the Musketeers (5-1) in a semifinal.

The Miners led by five points with 2 minutes left, but Matt Stainbrook and Myles Davis both made jumpers for Xavier to cut the difference to two points with 19 seconds to go.

Trailing 76-73 with 3 seconds left, the Musketeers turned over the ball on the inbounds play to send UTEP to the line.

The Miners (4-0) shot 4 of 6 on free throws in the final 10 seconds to stay ahead.
