Women’s basketball: Zags fall in Las Vegas to American

American took advantage of cold-shooting Gonzaga and upset the Bulldogs 59-56 at the South Point Shootout Friday in Las Vegas.

Michelle Holmes led the Eagles’ balanced attack with 15 points and eight rebounds.

Despite making just 6 of 21 first-half shots, Gonzaga led 25-19 at the break. American (1-3) got it together in the second half while the Bulldogs continued to struggle offensively.

The Eagles made 14 of 28 from the floor in the second half and 10 of 14 free throws.

Sunny Greinacher tallied a game-high 18 points for GU (3-1). Shelby Cheslek added 13 points and 14 rebounds.

Gonzaga made just 2 of 12 3-pointers and shot 34.6 percent from the field. They stayed with the Eagles mainly by making 18 of 24 free throws.

The Bulldogs will play No. 16 Iowa today. The Hawkeyes also lost their first game of the season on Friday, falling to unranked Arkansas.

Michigan 76, Washington State 64: The Cougars (4-2) couldn’t recover after falling behind 15-0 to start the game and lost to the Wolverines (4-1) at the San Juan Shootout in Guaynado, Puerto Rico.

Michigan’s Shannon Smith led a balanced attack with 17 points and six assists.

WSU’s Lia Galdeira had 24 points and Shalie Dheensaw added 10 points and six rebounds. All 10 of Dheensaw’s points came in the first half.

The Cougars narrowed the gap with an 8-2 run to open the second half, but the first-half deficit was too much to overcome.

Both teams were efficient from the free-throw line. The Cougars made 20 of 23 while Michigan made 19 of 22.

WSU will play Maryland today. The tenth-ranked Terrapins beat No. 23 James Madison on Friday.

Whitworth 63, Eastern Oregon 62: Jessica Kramer hit a jumper with 4 seconds left and the 19th-ranked Pirates rallied to beat the Mountaineers at the Lady ’Yote Classic in Caldwell, Idaho.

Kramer’s winner capped a 9-0 run for Whitworth. Eastern Oregon was held scoreless in the final 4 minutes of the second half.

Kramer finished with 11 points, five rebounds and five assists.

Katara Belton-Sharp led the Pirates with a game-high 15 points.

Maloree Moss scored 14 points and Kassy Larson added seven points and a game-high 11 rebounds for Eastern Oregon.

Whitworth will play College of Idaho today to conclude the tournament. The Pirates will play five nonconference games in December before starting their Northwest Conference schedule Dec. 2 at Willamette.

Glendale 67, CC Spokane 61: The Sasquatch opened the Gaucho tournament in Glendale, Arizona, with a loss to the Gauchos.

The tournament continues today.

The loss was the first in three games for the Sasquatch this season.
