Area roundup: Gonzaga ends Waves’ 34-match streak
Gonzaga recovered after dropping the first set and beat Pepperdine in a West Coast Conference match Thursday night in Spokane.
Scores were 22-25, 25-14, 25-19 and 25-15.
The win was GU’s first over the Waves in 34 matches, a streak that dates back to Nov. 2, 1996.
Savannah Blinn had 17 kills and three blocks and Jordan Gasser and McKayla Ferris combined for 24 more kills to lead the Bulldogs (10-4, 1-2).
Pepperdine’s Katie Messing led the Waves (6-10, 1-3) with 16 kills.
• Remo Gaogao had 14 kills and 17 digs and Southern Utah (10-4, 3-0) edged Eastern Washington in five sets in a Big Sky Conference match at Reese Court in Cheney.
Scores were 21-25, 25-19, 25-22, 17-25 and 15-13.
The Eagles (5-11, 1-2) had an 11-10 lead in the final set, but a service error and two straight attack errors did in Eastern Washington.
Allie Schumacher had 13 kills, Megan Lafond 19 digs and Talie Fermantez eight blocks to lead the Eagles.
Eastern Washington had snapped an eight-match losing streak in its last match, a five-set win over Northern Colorado on Sept. 27.
• Jessica Hastriter led three players in double figures with 16 kills and Idaho made quick work of Northern Arizona, beating the Lumberjacks in straight sets in a Big Sky Conference match in Moscow, Idaho. Scores were 25-23, 25-18 and 25-15.
Meredith Coba dished out 47 assists and Jenna Ellis added 24 digs for the Vandals, who play at Eastern Washington today.
Janae Vander Ploeg had nine kills and six digs for Northern Arizona.
Men’s soccer
Darwin Jones scored twice and No. 5 Washington clipped No. 13 California (6-2, 0-1) 3-2 in a Pac-12 Conference opener in Seattle.
Beau Blanchard also scored for the Huskies (8-1, 1-0), who won their sixth straight.
Stefano Bonomo and Seth Casiple scored California’s goals.
Washington hosts Stanford on Sunday.
Arena football
The Spokane Shock added defensive lineman and linebacker Mantangi Tonga to its 2015 roster. Tonga played with the Iowa Barnstormers for the past three seasons. The Barnstormers left the Arena Football League following the 2014 season.
He recorded 53 tackles, 6 1/2 sacks and two interceptions during his time with Iowa.
