Idaho, Whitworth on the road, look to rebound from home losses

Vandals at Bobcats

Saturday kickoff: 4 p.m. PDT, Jim Wacker Field, San Marcos, Texas Records: Idaho (0-4, 0-2 Sun Belt), Texas State (2-2, 0-0) Online/Radio: ESPN3/1080 and 1280-AM Overview: Considering how dreadfully they’ve played at home (and in a half-empty Kibbie Dome), it might be a relief for the Vandals to head back out on the road. Surely it’s a relief that the beleaguered defense made some strides last week, though it was still done in by a few big plays. Texas State’s option attack will be a tough assignment, however, led by quarterback Tyler Jones, the Sun Belt’s most efficient passer, and running back Robert Lowe, who’s averaging just under 90 yards a game. The Vandals must provide better protection for quarterback Matt Linehan, sacked seven times last week and on the run the rest of the time. And one of their four running backs must step forward. Bullish Elijhaa Penny may get the next chance.

Pirates at Boxers

Saturday kickoff: 1 p.m. at Forest Grove, Ore. Records: Whitworth (3-1, 1-0 Northwest Conference); Pacific (0-2) Radio: 1230-AM Overview: Whitworth hopes to rebound after the first loss of the Rod Sandberg era. Senior quarterback Bryan Peterson is expected to start despite suffering a hip injury in last week’s 49-34 loss at home to Chapman. Senior backup quarterback Michael McCune is ready to play but sophomore Ian Kolste remains doubtful with a shoulder injury. Running back Duke Degaetano is expected to play but coaches were not sure whether senior corner back De’ Hall. He will be a game-time decision. Pacific, which has two close losses, beat Whitworth 31-21 last year in the Pine Bowl.
