Spokane police: Teen boy shot in chest

A teenaged boy was shot in the chest this afternoon in north Spokane and taken to the hospital for the potentially life-threatening injury, police said. The suspected shooter, also a teenaged boy, is in contact with police. The investigation is ongoing, but it appears to be an accidental shooting, police said. Initial information indicates the teens were playing with a gun and believed the chamber of the gun was empty, police said. The shooting happened around 2:45 p.m. in the 1700 block of E. Vanetta. Officers responded to the scene about three minutes after the initial call and located the boy with a gunshot wound to the chest. Spokane Police Officer Shane Phillips immediately rendered aid to the victim. Responding officers quickly located and contacted the teen boy who is believed to have shot the victim.
