Obituary: Cullen, John Stephen

CULLEN, John Stephen (1954-2014) John Stephen Cullen died on September 17, 2014, at his home in the City of the Spokane Valley.

He was born at Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane on December 9, 1954, the eighth child of William E. and Helen D. Cullen, both of Spokane.

John’s father was a long-time attorney and a veteran of WW II, having served as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps in the Pacific theater.

John attended grade school at both St. Augustine and St. Peter Catholic parishes on Spokane’s South Hill.

He graduated from Joel E. Ferris High School in 1972 before attending Eastern Washington University, where he received his bachelor degree and his MBA.

He worked for many years as a computer specialist for the Washington State Legislature in Olympia, Washington.

John was an avid reader, especially of WWII history.

He loved esoteric movies, conversation, and debate.

Growing up, he spent his summers on Hayden Lake in northern Idaho-a place he loved and where he developed a fondness for swimming and skiing.

John was deeply devoted to his parents, family, and friends.

He is survived by seven brothers and sisters: William E. Cullen (Olympia), Kathryn C. Richardson (Yakima), David D. Cullen (Olympia), Robert K. Cullen (Spokane), Julie C. Arnold (Spokane), Theresa C. John’s sister, Corlin C. Buckmaster, preceded him in death.

He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

The Rev.

C. M. Cullen, SJ, will offer a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 428 W. 19th Avenue, on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at 10:00 a.m.
