Obituary: Merrick, Conrad George
Age 88
Conrad was born in St. Maries, Idaho on November 11, 1925 and grew up in Fernwood, Idaho.
He graduated from St. Maries High School in 1944 after which he joined the Air Force serving in India (now Bangladesh).
After his discharge he entered the University of Idaho earning a BS in Forest Management in 1951.
He worked for the US Forest Service in Idaho and the US Bureau of Public Roads in Alaska before joining the US Geological Survey as a cartographer, where he worked in the Western Division of Field Surveys for 22 years.
He completed his career with the USGS working in Menlo Park, CA in the Photogrammetry and Geodetic sections.
Conrad was the cartographer and navigator of the 1961-1962 Antarctic Peninsula Traverse and the Merrick Mountains in Palmer Land, Antarctica were named for him by US-ACAN.
He was a man of service and always cared for and supported his family in all endeavors.
In retirement, Conrad enjoyed spending time with his family and summers at his cabin on Lake Coeur d’Alene in Idaho.
Conrad was preceded in death by his wife Phyllis (Bogar) in 2004.
Conrad is survived by his two sons (David and Daniel) his two daughters in law (Gretchen and Ulrike) and his four grandchildren (Emma, Ford, Nick and Kira) along with many friends and extended family.
Services will be held at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, 5810 Midway Rd., Dixon, CA on November 14, 2014 at 3PM.
