Prep roundup: NC’s Anderson first at Richland Invitational

North Central senior Tanner Anderson set a new meet record Saturday at the Richland Invitational cross country meet at Carmichael Middle School in Richland.

Anderson took first place, covering the 3-mile course in 14 minutes, 36.05 seconds. The previous meet record was held by North Central’s Kai Wilmot, who posted a time of 14:44 in 2012.

Anderson’s time was more than 8 seconds faster than his first-place finish at the State 3A meet last fall.

Andrew Vandine and Justin Janke also fared well for the Indians. Vandine took fifth place in 15:36.09 and Janke was sixth in 15:45.95.

North Central finished with 64 team points, blowing out the field. Eisenhower was second with 100 points, followed by Central Valley (111), Jesuit (185), Hermiston (221) and Mead (223).

East Valley’s Scott Kopczynski (15:27.39) and Chad Stevens (15:34.43) finished third and fourth, respectively, and the Knights took 10th place.

Jesuit won the girls title and Central Valley took second.

Local finishers inside the top 10 included East Valley’s Brittany Aquino (third; 18:52.79), Shadle Park’s Lauren Dunnell (fourth; 19:02.70), Mt. Spokane’s Micaela Kostecka (sixth; 19:17.49), Lewis and Clark’s Katie Thronson (eighth, 19:24.88), Shadle Park’s Ashley Hauger (ninth; 19:25.09) and Lewis and Clark’s Abby Smith (10th; 19:26.57).

• Lake City won the boys team title and Coeur d’Alene claimed the girls title at the Sandpoint Invitational in Sandpoint.

LC’s Jake Finney led a Timberwolves’ 1-2-3 finish. He completed the 3-mile course in 15:39. Kyle Little (16:07) was second and Riley Estes was third (16:35).

The Lewiston boys were second, followed by Coeur d’Alene and Sandpoint.

Coeur d’Alene’s Josie Brown was the girls champion in 18:30. Viking teammates Caitlin Conway (18:40) and Kara Story (18:44) finished second and third, respectively.

• Lakeside had five top 10 finishers and the Eagles boys took the team title at the NWC Invitational at Audubon Park.

Troy Traeger was Lakeside’s top finisher. He took second place after completing the 3-mile course in 17:26.71.

St. George’s Nathan Vanos won in 17:26.71.

Lind-Ritzville’s Tracy Melville won the girls race in 18:44.98, but Lakeside claimed the team title.

Boys soccer

Devon Hoffman had a goal and an assist and Lake City blanked Lewiston 3-0 in a 5A Region I loser-out match in Coeur d’Alene.

The Timberwolves will take on Post Falls or Coeur d’Alene on Wednesday with a state berth on the line.

• Corbin Maltaba had a goal and four assists and Priest River blanked Orofino 7-0 in a 3A District I-II loser-out match at Timberlake High School at Spirit Lake.

The Spartans scored four goals in the first half and three more in the second half.

Priest River advances to play Bonners Ferry in a loser-out match Tuesday at Priest River.

Girls soccer

Cydney Roop and Kylie Hanson scored first-half goals and Coeur d’Alene held on to clip Lewiston 2-1 in a 5A Region I match in Lewiston.

The Vikings advance to play Post Falls or Lake City on Wednesday, with the winner earning a spot in the state tournament.
