Top 25 football: Baylor rallies to erase 21-point deficit, beats TCU
Chris Callahan kicked a 28-yard field goal as time expired and No. 5 Baylor wiped out a 21-point deficit in the final 11 minutes to beat No. 9 TCU 61-58 on Saturday in Waco, Texas.
Bryce Petty threw six touchdown passes for the Bears (6-0, 3-0 Big 12), including a 25-yarder to Corey Coleman with 4:42 left in the fourth that tied it at 58. Petty passed for 510 yards and threw two interceptions.
TCU moved to midfield and faced fourth-and-three from the Baylor 45 with 1:17 left in the fourth. Instead of punting, the Horned Frogs elected to try to keep the ball and end it in regulation.
Trevone Boykin tossed a sideline fade toward Josh Doctson that the receiver couldn’t come up with. TCU was looking for a pass interference call on Ryan Reid but didn’t get it.
(1) Florida State 38, Syracuse 20: Jameis Winston threw for 317 yards and three TDs, Mario Pender scored twice, and the Seminoles (6-0, 4-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) rolled to a win over the Orange (2-4, 0-2) in Syracuse, New York.
Florida State has won a school-record 22 straight games, the longest streak in the nation, and 19 in a row in the conference.
(3) Mississippi 35, Texas A&M 20: Bo Wallace ran for two scores and threw a TD pass and Mississippi’s defense added two scores to help the third-ranked Rebels (6-0, 3-0 SEC) remain undefeated with a victory over the Aggies (5-2, 2-2) in College Station, Texas.
Wallace gave Mississippi an early lead with touchdown runs on consecutive possession in the first quarter. Cody Prewitt returned an interception 75 yards for a score in the second quarter to make it 21-0.
( 6) Notre Dame 50, North Carolina 43: Everett Golson threw for 300 yards and three TDs to overcome his three turnovers that led to North Carolina scores and the Fighting Irish (6-0) held off the Tar Heels (2-4) in South Bend, Indiana.
North Carolina’s Marquise Williams threw two TD passes, ran for another score and caught a 23-yard TD pass from receiver Quinshad Davis late in the third quarter to give the Tar Heels a 36-35 lead.
(7) Alabama 14, Arkansas 13: Blake Sims threw two TD passes and the Crimson Tide (5-1, 2-1) narrowly avoided its second straight Southeastern Conference loss with a shaky win over the Razorbacks (3-3, 0-3) in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Alabama fumbled four times and were outgained 335-227 in the game.
(8) Michigan State 45, Purdue 31: Connor Cook threw three TD passes, Nick Hill ran for two scores and a late interception return for a touchdown allowed the Spartans (5-1, 2-0 Big Ten) to outlast the Boilermakers (3-4, 1-1) in West Lafayette, Indiana.
(11) Oklahoma 31, Texas 26: Alex Ross had a 91-yard kickoff return for a TD, Zack Sanchez scored on a 43-yard interception return and the Sooners (5-1, 2-1 Big 12) held off the Longhorns (2-4, 1-2) in Dallas to win the Red River rivalry.
(13) Georgia 34, Missouri 0: Hunter Mason completed 22 of 28 passes for 156 yards and a TD and ran for a score as the Bulldogs (5-1, 3-1 SEC) shut out the Tigers (4-2, 1-1) in Columbia, Missouri, without suspended star running back Todd Gurley.
Georgia freshman Nick Chubb rushed for 143 yards and a TD in Gurley’s place.
(16) Oklahoma State 27, Kansas 20: Tyreek Hill returned a kickoff 99 yards for a fourth-quarter TD and the Cowboys (5-1, 3-0 Big 12) held on for a victory over the Jayhawks (2-4, 0-3) in Lawrence, Kansas.
(19) East Carolina 28, South Florida 17: Shane Carden led three long touchdown drives (84, 86 and 79 yards) to start the second half and the Pirates (5-1, 2-0 American Athletic Conference) shrugged off a slow start to come back and beat the Bulls (2-4, 1-1) in Tampa, Florida.
Duke 31, (22) Georgia Tech 25: Anthony Boone threw for 123 yards and a TD, Josh Sneed rushed for 102 yards and a score, and the Blue Devils (5-1, 1-1 ACC) snapped a 10-year losing streak against Georgia Tech by beating the Yellow Jackets (5-1, 2-1) in Atlanta.
