Cougars defeat Ducks in double OT

Mariah Powers’ first goal for the Washington State Cougars couldn’t have come at a better time.

Powers, a junior, scored in the second overtime – at the 106:40 mark – to propel the Cougars (8-3-2, 3-2-1 Pac-12) to a 1-0 victory over the Oregon Ducks (6-6-2, 2-3-1) in Pacific-12 Conference women’s soccer action on Sunday in Pullman.

Beau Bremer dribbled the ball to the middle and sent a pass into the box that Powers redirected with a slide inside the near post. The assist by Bremer was her team-leading ninth point of the season.

Cougars goalkeeper Gurveen Clair made two saves in recording her school-record 33rd career shutout.

• Olivia Baggerly and Chloe Bell each scored a goal late in the second half to help the Idaho Vandals (4-11-2, 4-2-2 Big Sky) earn a 2-2 tie with the Idaho State Bengals (6-7-1, 3-3-1) in Big Sky Conference play in Moscow.

Baggerly’s goal in the 76th minute cut the Bengals’ lead to 2-1 and Bell scored the equalizer in the 82nd minute.

• Chloe Williams found the net in the 21st minute and keeper Nathalie Schwery made it stand up with six saves to lead the Eastern Washington Eagles (7-6-0, 4-3 Big Sky) to a 1-0 victory over the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks (7-5-3, 3-2-2) in Flagstaff, Arizona.

• The Pacific Lutheran Lutes (10-3-1, 8-2 NWC) scored a goal in each half en route to a 2-0 win over the Whitworth Pirates (4-10-1, 3-8) in Northwest Conference play in Parkland, Washington.

Men’s soccer

Sam Engle notched a pair of goals and Micheal Ramos chipped in with his conference-leading 12th goal of the season to propel the Whitworth Pirates (11-1-2, 6-1-2 NWC) to a 4-3 win over the Pacific Lutheran Lutes (7-8, 4-5) in Northwest Conference action in Parkland, Washington.

Tyler Clarke scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 73rd minute for Whitworth.

• Aaron Lombardi scored two goals, including the game-winner in the second overtime, to lift the San Francisco Dons (8-3-2, 2-0 WCC) to a 2-1 win over the visiting Gonzaga Bulldogs (3-10, 1-1) in a West Coast Conference match.

Clark Phillips scored on a penalty kick for GU.

• Ian Lange and Justin Schmidt each had a goal and an assist to lead the top-ranked Washington Huskies (10-2-1, 3-1-1) to a 3-2 victory over the San Diego State Aztecs (7-7, 1-4) in Pacific-12 Conference play in San Diego.

Volleyball

Macey Gardner totaled 25 kills, 23 digs and four blocks to carry the 17th-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils (14-6, 4-4 Pac-12) to a 3-2 victory over the Washington State Cougars (9-11, 0-8) in Pacific-12 Conference action in Tempe, Arizona.

Jaicee Harris led the Cougars with 20 kills and 23 digs. Kate Sommer pitched in with 32 digs, moving her into second place on the WSU all-time list with 1,259.

• Krista Vansant had a match-high 24 kills and the fourth-ranked Washington Huskies (19-0, 8-0 Pac-12) cruised to a 3-1 win over the 16th-ranked Arizona Wildcats (16-4, 5-3) in Pac-12 play in Tucson, Arizona.

Tennis

Alvaro Nazal of the Gonzaga Bulldogs continued his run at the men’s ITA Northwest Regionals with a victory in the quarterfinal round at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium in Palo Alto, California.

Nazal defeated Nolan Paige of host school Stanford 6-7 (6), 7-5, 6-1.

Nazal advances to the semifinals where he will face Ashot Khacharyan of Santa Clara today at 11 a.m. for a berth in the finals.

Junior hockey

Tanner Stolz scored two goals and Weston Walker, Jonny Marzec, Quinn Mosby and Chauncey Hughes all added a goal and two assists to power the host Spokane Braves (6-5-0-3) to a 9-3 romp over the Grand Forks Border Bruins (5-10-1-0) in KIJHL action.
