Prep roundup: U-Hi edges Mt. Spokane to stay tied for first in GSL volleyball

University withstood another stiff challenge on Tuesday to remain tied for first place in Greater Spokane League volleyball.

Rachael Schlect had 14 kills and four blocks, and Brooklynn Tacke added four blocks and three aces as the visiting Titans (7-0) held off Mt. Spokane 25-15, 18-25, 25-13, 22-25, 15-3.

U-Hi also had to go five games to defeat Lewis and Clark last Thursday.

The road doesn’t get any easier for the Titans, who will host Mead (5-2) on Friday and close the league season on Tuesday at Central Valley (7-0).

The Wildcats (3-4), who forced a fifth game after trailing 15-20 in the fourth, were led by Adrienne Dotson’s 17 kills and Karly Cantu’s 41 assists and four aces.

Mt. Spokane leads the league’s 3A teams by one game over Shadle Park.

Also in the league, Jade Rockwood had 11 kills and 19 assists as Central Valley posted a 25-13, 25-20, 25-21 win at Lewis and Clark. For the fifth-place Tigers (4-3), Sydney Underwood had 10 kills while Mary Stoa had 13 assists and an ace. … Seniors Madi Roberts (four blocks) and Kristina Volz (16 kills) guided Mead to a 28-26, 22-25, 25-12, 25-18 victory over visiting Shadle Park. Junior Payton Douglass added 35 digs for Mead, which is tied for third place with Gonzaga Prep. Josie Walser led Shadle Park (2-5) with 29 assists. … Macy Collins had nine kills, two aces and two blocks as host Gonzaga Prep (5-2) defeated North Central 25-15, 25-15, 26-24. Adriana Sosa led the Indians (0-7) with 19 digs and two aces. … Shaelyn Pearson totaled 19 assists, 13 digs and three aces as Ferris (2-5) defeated host Rogers 25-12, 26-24, 25-20. Kabao Xiong had 29 digs and two aces for the Pirates (0-7).

• Emily Sior (28 assists), Jordan Phelan (11 kills) and Shayln Stack (11 kills) led Great Northern League champion East Valley (11-0) to a victory at Pullman. Melissa Langerveld had seven kills for Pullman (6-4). … Also in the league, Tori Zeimantz had 12 kills and three aces as Clarkston (4-6) defeated host West Valley 25-22, 25-23, 25-23. Erin Higbie had nine kills and two blocks for the Eagles (1-10). … Cheney (4-6) was idle.

Softball

Celynna Cobb had three hits, including a grand slam home run, and the Central Valley Bears defeated the North Central Indians 15-5 in five innings in a slow-pitch district semifinal game at CV.

Kelsey Gumm had a triple for Central Valley.

The Bears will host the University Titans in the district finals today.

• Tasha Nelson went 4 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs and pitcher Lexi Ivankovich had four hits and ran her record to 20-1 on the season as the University Titans breezed to a 13-3 victory over the visiting Shadle Park Highlanders in the other district semifinal game.

Girls soccer

Morgan Williams scored a pair of goals in the second half and the West Valley Eagles (11-3, 9-2) rolled to a 3-0 victory over the visiting Clarkston Bantams (9-4, 6-4) in Great Northern League play.

• Shannon Frucci scored the equalizer on a first-half penalty kick and Micaela Verdal and Skylar Bastin found the net in the second half to propel the East Valley Knights (9-3, 8-3) to a 3-1 victory over the Pullman Greyhounds (0-13, 0-10) in GNL play in Pullman.
