In Brief: Crystal Chandeliers Ballroom Dance Club hosting masquerade ball

SPOKANE – The Crystal Chandeliers Ballroom Dance Club will present a masquerade ball Sunday at the Lincoln Center, 1316 N. Lincoln St.

Proceeds will benefit the Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery. The doors open at 2 p.m. and music from Tuxedo Junction will be from 3 to 6 p.m.

The event is formal dress. Tickets are $27 and are on sale at http://ccballroom.com/ and include a masquerade mask, a line dance lesson and appetizers.

Garland hosting avenue event

GARLAND NEIGHBORHOOD – The Garland Business District will present Ghosts on Garland on Saturday starting at 9 a.m.

The day’s events include free coffee, hot cocoa, cider and doughnuts from the Oliver Branch Church outside of the Discovery Shop, 805 E. Garland Ave.

There will be carriage rides from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. One ticket for $2 will cover the cost of unlimited rides along Garland Avenue. Riders can get on or off at several locations from Wall Street to Cedar Street.

The Spokane Art School, 809 W. Garland Ave., will have a scarecrow workshop from 1 to 3 p.m. Participants must register at (509) 325-3001.

Celebrations Bakery, 713 W. Garland Ave., will host a cupcake eating contest at 3 p.m.

At midnight, the Garland Theater will present “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” Tickets are $7.

Coats 4 Kids holding coat drive

WEST PLAINS - Cheney Helping Cheney/Coats 4 Kids is distributing free coats for those in need.

Coats will be distributed:

• Friday from 3 to 5 p.m. at Sunset Elementary School, 12824 W. 12th St., Airway Heights

• Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Salnave Elementary School, 1015 Salnave Road, Cheney, and Westwood Middle School, 6120 S. Abbott Road, Spokane

• Monday from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Feed Cheney dinner at the Wren Pierson Building, 616 Third St., Cheney.

Local churches, schools and businesses have collected more than 200 coats for distribution. There is no need to register or show verification of income for a coat.

EWU, WSU host Senior Smile Day

SPOKANE – Eastern Washington University and WSU Spokane Health Sciences are hosting Senior Smile Day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday in the Health Sciences Building, 310 N. Riverpoint Blvd.

The event for senior citizens will include free flu vaccinations, oral cancer screenings, fall prevention workshops, gait screenings, hearing tests, nutrition consultations and blood pressure screenings.

Riverside hosting candidate forum

DOWNTOWN SPOKANE – The Riverside Neighborhood Council will host a candidate forum Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. in room 1A of the Downtown Spokane Public Library, 906 W. Main.

Candidates scheduled to attend include Joe Pakootas, Tim Benn, Al French, Mary Lou Johnson, Ozzie Knezovich and Doug Orr. Questions from the audience will be taken and candidates may take up to three minutes to respond.

Spokane Library holding book sale

DOWNTOWN – The Friends of the Spokane Library is holding a book sale today and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the downtown branch, 906 W. Main Ave.

All the proceeds of the sale benefit the library.
