Roundup: Coeur d’Alene girls dominate regional cross country

Led by senior Josie Brown, the two-time defending 5A champion Coeur d’Alene girls earned a return trip to state with a dominating win Thursday at the 5A Region I cross country meet in Sandpoint.

The Vikings finished with 16 team points. Lewiston (55) was second, followed by Post Falls (67) and Lake City (112).

Coeur d’Alene claimed the top four individual spots, led by Brown’s 5,000-meter time of 18 minutes, 19 seconds. Caitlin Conway was second (18:21.57), Kara Story was third (18:21.8) and Krista Story was fourth (19:23).

Lake City won the boys race. The Timberwolves’ Jake Finney earned medalist honors after finishing the 5K in 15:53. Lake City’s Kyle Little was second in 15:55 and Riley Estes was third in 16:24.

The state meet, for all classifications, will be held Nov. 1 at Eagle Island State Park. The top two teams in the 5A, 4A and 3A ranks, along with the top one-third individual placers, earned state-meet berths.

• The host Sandpoint boys and girls won team titles at the 4A Region I meet.

In the girls race, Moscow’s Katherine Ruck took medalist honors at 18:37 for 5,000. Sandpoint’s Rainey Woodward was second in 19:28, followed by teammates Mikhaela Woodward (19:36) and Sharon Rowe (19:37). Sandpoint is the defending 4A champions.

Moscow’s Josh Corgatelli won the boys race in 16:42. Sandpoint’s Jacob Graham was second in 16:51.

• The Timberlake boys and girls claimed team titles at the 3A District I meet at Spirit Lake.

Kassidy Hammond led a first-through-fifth finish for the Tiger girls. Hammond ran the 5,000 in 19:48.9.

Bonners Ferry’s Jacob Perkins was the boys champion after crossing in 17:22.3. Timberlake’s Brayden Menti was second in 17:27.2.

Girls soccer

Ashley Meyer, Jenna Sullens and Kiana Nagata scored early in the second half and West Valley (12-3, 10-2) claimed the Great Northern League title with a 3-0 win at Cheney (3-12, 3-8).

The defending GNL-champion Eagles made it to the quarterfinals of the state tournament last year before falling 2-0 to West Valley (Yakima).

• Also in the league, Makinzie Packwood’s 71st-minute goal broke a 1-all tie and gave Clarkston (10-4, 7-4) a 2-1 win over visiting Pullman (0-14, 0-11).
