Thunderbirds slip by Chiefs in tournament

Scott Eansor scored a goal 4 minutes, 45 seconds into overtime and the Seattle Thunderbirds completed a rally from a two-goal deficit to edge the Spokane Chiefs 3-2 at the preseason Kennewick Tournament on Thursday night.

Spokane (2-1-1) got off to a quick start with a two-goal first period. Liam Stewart put the Chiefs up 1-0 with a power-play tally at the 15:39 mark and Adam Helewka stretched the lead to 2-0 at 18:57.

But Seattle’s Ryan Gropp found the net 54 seconds later to halve the lead heading into the second period.

Mathew Barzai scored the equalizer for Seattle at the 12:05 mark of the third period to force overtime.

Garret Hughson started in goal for Spokane and stopped 13 of 15 shots in 34:09 of action. Alex Moodie took over from there and stopped 13 of 14 shots.

Danny Mumaugh went the distance in goal for Seattle (3-1), turning away 20 of 22 shots.

Spokane was 1 of 5 on the power play, while the Thunderbirds were denied on all five of their chances.

Tri-City slipped past Kootenay 5-4 in the other match of the tournament.

Boys soccer

Matt Gray scored a pair of second-half goals and St. Maries rolled to a 3-0 victory over visiting Bonners Ferry in Intermountain League play.
