Tri-City defeats Spokane in overtime

As was the case for most of the preseason, the Spokane Chiefs came up short offensively on Saturday night.

Braden Purtill’s overtime goal gave Tri-City (5-3-0-0) a 2-1 win over Spokane (2-3-2-0) in a Western Hockey League preseason finale at the Toyota Center in Kennewick.

Riley Whittingham’s power-play goal in the third period was all the Chiefs could muster. It was just the sixth goal in their last five games.

Spokane opens the regular season next Saturday night at Tri-City.

• Max Newton had a goal and four assists as Grand Forks (1-1-0-0) beat the Spokane Braves 6-3 in a KIJHL game in Grand Forks, B.C. Jonny Marzec, Kyle Davis and Chauncey Hughes scored for Spokane (0-1-0-0).

Volleyball

Washington State (7-2) fell in straight sets to No. 12 Illinois (5-3) to wrap up play at the Blue Raider Bash in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

The Cougars were led by Jaicee Harris, who had 14 kills and eight digs. WSU opened the day with a sweep of Belmont (3-7).

• Savannah Blinn and Jordan Gasser had 15 kills apiece and Gonzaga (6-3) swept Weber State (2-8) at the Wyoming Invitational in Laramie, Wyoming. The Bulldogs fell 3-2 to Furman (6-4) earlier in the day.

• Idaho (4-6) recovered after dropping the first set and beat Portland (4-4) 3-1 at the Idaho Nike Invitational at Memorial Gym in Moscow, Idaho. Scores were 22-25, 25-23, 25-20 and 25-16.

Vandals’ sophomore Ali Forde had a career-high 15 kills, Becca Mau added 14 and Jessica Hastriter chipped in 11.

Also at the tournament, Eastern Washington (4-5) fell to Missouri (8-4) and Boise State (4-5).

The Eagles began the day with a 25-22, 25-17, 20-25, 26-24 loss to Missouri. EWU’s Kelsey Julian had 15 kills and Kellen Barfield added six blocks.

Eastern then fell 25-16, 25-19, 25-19 to Boise State.

• Community Colleges of Spokane (10-6) fell to Blue Mountain (17-1) before beating Clackamas (7-6) at the Walla Walla Invitational.

Men’s soccer

Alex Opland scored twice and Community Colleges of Spokane (7-2, 5-0) blanked South Puget Sound (0-6, 0-4) 3-0 in a Northwest Athletic Conference match at Spokane Falls Community College.

Women’s soccer

Clara Merlino and Danielle Wieck notched goals and Whitman (3-2, 1-0) held on late to beat Whitworth (1-3-1, 0-1) 2-1 in a Northwest Conference opener in Walla Walla.

The Pirates’ Megan McCart scored an unassisted goal in the 90th minute.

• Anna Goodrie’s 47th-minute goal broke a 1-all tie and gave Lane (2-1-2, 2-1-1) a 2-1 win over Community Colleges of Spokane (7-2, 4-1) in a Northwest Athletic Conference match at Spokane Falls Community College.

Lane’s Taylor Boyer opened the scoring in the 16th minute, but CCS’ Hannah Sanders responded with a goal in the 39th minute before Goodrie’s match-winner.

Cross country

Gonzaga’s Amelia Evans took fifth place and the Bulldogs’ women finished fifth at the West Coast Conference Preview Meet at Baylands Park in Sunnyvale, California.

Evans finished the 6,000-meter course in 21 minutes, 19.70 seconds.

• Brigham Young senior Andrea Nelson Harrison, a 2010 graduate of Shadle Park High School, took first place by more than 7 seconds at the BYU Autumn Classic in Provo, Utah.
