Shadle tops CV in 47-33 shootout

Rypien tosses 6 TDs, tops 10,000 yards

Brett Rypien reached a new pinnacle on Thursday night, which doesn’t seem to surprise anybody but him.

Rypien threw for 455 yards and six touchdowns, in the process surpassing 10,000 career passing yards, as Shadle Park (3-1) pulled away from stubborn Central Valley (1-3) in the fourth quarter for a 47-33 win at Albi Stadium.

“That just sounds surreal, to be honest with you,” Rypien said after being informed of the milestone. “Going into my career, I never pictured we’d be throwing for this many yards. I can’t credit our team enough.”

Rypien completed 27 of 48 passes with no interceptions, logging the big numbers despite a slow start of 2-for-8 passing for 19 yards.

He now has 10,227 career yards passing.

The biggest throws came with Shadle clinging to a 34-33 lead midway through the final quarter. Rypien found senior Sam Stratton for a 47-yard score with 8 minutes, 19 seconds left, and, after CV fumbled away the kickoff, hit Jayden Nguyen for an 11-yarder to cap the scoring with 6:46 left.

“It’s nice to know that you have the best player on the field everywhere you go,” Shadle coach Jim Mace said.

“As long as he keeps his composure, the kids just feed off him. He has that confidence that the next play he’s going to score.”

The game counts as a nonleaguer between Greater Spokane League teams CV (4A) and Shadle (3A).

The Bears held the lead four times, the final time with 2:54 left in the third quarter when junior running back Brandon Anderton broke two tackles for a 7-yard TD run and a 30-28 lead.

Rypien needed less than a minute to recapture the lead with a 34-yard strike to Stratton, who finished with four receptions for 119 yards and three TDs.

“It never felt like we had time to relax,” Rypien said. “I told our guys the second half that we’d have to score every time we had the ball. That would be our mantra for the second half.”

“(CV) had a good defensive scheme,” Mace said. “They made things difficult and didn’t run what we thought they would, so it took us a little while to adjust to that. Thankfully, the defense held them to some field goals when we turned the ball over and made it rough out there.”

Bears sophomore Ryan Rehkow kicked field goals of 22, 27, 44 and 36 yards.

CV junior Tanner Sloan came out firing, especially after the Bears lost their leading rusher, sophomore Braedon Orrino, after a 3-yard carry on the first play. Orrino limped off and didn’t return.

Sloan finished 25 of 49 for 345 yards, with one TD and three interceptions.

“They’re a good team and we knew their storied program,” Rypien said. “We came out in the second half and played a lot better. That’s what we have to do for four quarters.”

Mace took Rypien’s newest standard as par for the course.

“We know he’s setting a lot of records, but ultimately, and credit to him, there’s no talk about it – just talk about executing the next play,” he said.

Sunnyside Christian 52, Colton 48: A 10-play drive – one that included a conversion on fourth-and-6 – led to a touchdown with less than 2 minutes left, and the Knights edged the Wildcats (3-1, 2-1) in a Southeast 1B League game in Sunnyside, Washington.

Colton quarterback Carter Dahmen completed 13 of 18 passes for 265 and three touchdowns. He also had 130 yards and four scores on the ground.
