Saturday’s area college football games at a glance

Cardinal at Huskies

Kickoff: 1:15 p.m. PDT, Husky Stadium

Records: Stanford (2-1, 0-1 Pac-12), Washington (4-0)

TV/Radio: Fox 28/590-AM

Overview: There are few secrets with the Cardinal. They line up in power formations and run the ball between the tackles, then they run the ball outside the tackles, then they run the ball between the tackles some more. Quarterback Kevin Hogan will play-fake and throw over the top to one of Stanford’s talented receivers like Ty Montgomery, Devon Cajuste or Michael Rector. UW quarterback Cyler Miles has taken care of the ball through four games, but hasn’t shown an ability to throw downfield with much effectiveness. A strong defensive team like Stanford could pose even more problems in that aspect of the game, so the Huskies need to establish the run early to help ease the pressure on Miles.

Jaguars at Vandals

Kickoff: 2 p.m., Kibbie Dome, Moscow

Records: Idaho (0-3, 0-1 Sun Belt), South Alabama (1-2, 0-1)

Web/Radio: ESPN3/1080 and 1280-AM

Overview: Last week against the Vandals, Ohio doubled its point output from its first three games. Now Idaho faces another offensively challenged team in the Jaguars, last in the Sun Belt in points and pass efficiency, and ninth in yardage – so at least it appears to be “mission do-able” for the beleaguered UI defense, which is giving up 500 yards a game. But the Jags’ athleticism will present problems, especially from the likes of safety Terrell Brigham and a veteran defensive line led by Jesse Kelley. Idaho quarterback Matt Linehan has excelled in mixing his targets, with four receivers having 16 or more catches.

Panthers at Pirates

Kickoff: 1 p.m., Pine Bowl

Records: Whitworth (3-0, 1-0 Northwest Conference), Chapman (0-1)

TV/Radio: SWX/1230-AM

Overview: Whitworth returns home after two successful road games in California. Last Saturday, senior quarterback Bryan Peterson broke several single-game passing records in the 50-48 win over La Verne. Peterson (West Valley) set the new NCAA D-III mark for completions and consecutive passes without an interception. He also set school records for completions (58), attempts (82) and passing yards (580) and total offense (559). He will lead the Pirates against a Panthers team that lost a tough 21-14 game last week to Northwest Conference powerhouse Linfield. Chapman beat Whitworth 38-17 last year en route to an 8-1 finish. Pirates sophomore QB Ian Kolste, who started the win against Whittier, continues to nurse a sore shoulder and remains questionable today.
