Area roundup: Mike Ramos ties school records in Whitworth soccer romp

Mike Ramos had three goals and four assists and tied two school records in Whitworth’s 7-1 rout of George Fox in Northwest League men’s soccer action Saturday afternoon in Newberg, Oregon.

The 10 total points tied the school record. Jace Jones originally set the mark in 1999 against California Maritime. Ramos’ four assists ties him with Ali Seyedali and Ben Wickert for most assists in a game.

Ramos scored his first goal in the14th minute, then tacked on another in the 28th minute to give the Pirates (7-0-1, 2-0-1) a 3-0 halftime lead. He scored his third late in the second half.

Karl Muelheims, Rylan Berriman, Kyle Morris and Sam Engle also scored for Whitworth, which held a commanding 21-8 shot advantage over George Fox (2-5-1, 0-3).

The Pirates play at Pacific today.

• Adam Talley scored twice to lead North Idaho (8-0-1, 6-0-1) past Columbia Basin (2-2-5, 2-1-4) 3-0 in a Northwest Athletic Conference match in Pasco.

Talley scored in the 39th minute and the 82nd minute. NIC’s Braden Ridgewell opened the scoring in the 15th minute.

Women’s soccer

Tegan Grunwald scored off a rebound in the 78th minute and Linfield (6-1, 3-1) topped Whitworth (1-6-1, 0-4) 1-0 in a Northwest Conference match in McMinnville, Oregon.

Emily Fellows assisted on the match-winner.

• Sarah Melvin had a hat trick and Rashelle Fisher added a goal and three assists and Community Colleges of Spokane blanked Wenatchee Valley (1-8-2, 1-6-2) 8-0 in a Northwest Athletic Conference match at Spokane Falls Community College.

Fisher got the scoring spree started in the second minute. CCS (10-2-1, 7-1-1) scored four goals in each half.

• Wenatchee Valley scored two goals late in the second half and the Knights (7-1-2, 6-1-1) beat Community Colleges of Spokane (7-5, 5-3) 4-2 in a Northwest Athletic Conference match at Spokane Falls Community College.

CCS’ Alex Opland scored in the 32nd minute and the 46th minute to knot the match at 2, but Josh Alvarez and Mauricio scored late to put Wenatchee Valley on top.

• Columbia Basin and North Idaho played to a scoreless draw in an NWAC match in Pasco.

Stephanie Gibson made 10 saves for Columbia Basin (3-4-3, 3-2-3) and Cassy van der Mey made six saves for NIC (4-0-6, 3-0-6).

Volleyball

Alaysia Brown and Sandra Lozic had 17 kills apiece and No. 24 San Diego (9-5, 2-0) edged Gonzaga in five sets in a West Coast Conference match in San Diego. Scores were 21-25, 25-20, 23-25, 25-18 and 17-15.

Savannah Blinn had a match-high 27 kills for the Bulldogs (9-4, 0-2) and McKayla Ferris added 19. GU’s Lauren Joseph dished out 50 assists and added 14 digs.

The loss was GU’s second straight following a three-match winning streak. The Bulldogs host Pepperdine on Thursday.

• Kelsey Julian led four players in double figures with 21 kills and Eastern Washington snapped an eight-match losing streak with a Big Sky Conference win over Northern Colorado (7-7, 0-2) in Greeley, Colorado. Scores were 25-20, 19-25, 19-25, 25-22 and 18-16.

EWU’s Talia Fermantez had 15 kills, Allie Schumacher added 11 kills and Ana Jakovljevic chipped in 10 kills and 11 digs.

Sophie Miller and Nicole Rigoni combined for 54 assists for the Eagles (5-10, 1-1), who host Big Sky foe Southern Utah on Thursday.

• Nicole Leonard and Cassandra Mendoza combined for 25 kills and Whitworth (9-4, 2-2) swept Pacific (5-8, 1-3) in a Northwest Conference match in Spokane. Scores were 25-19, 25-11 and 25-18.

The Pirates’ Maddye Dinsmore handed out 37 assists and Mallorie Schoesler had a team-high nine digs.

• Anna Pioske had 16 kills and Lexi Robinson added 14 kills as North Dakota (14-5, 2-0) beat Idaho (5-9, 1-1) in a Western Athletic Conference match in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Scores were 16-25, 25-8, 25-27, 25-17 and 20-18.

Ali Forde had 17 kills and 13 digs, Stephanie Hagins added 16 kills and Meredith Coba dished out 56 assists to lead the Vandals. Robinson had 15 digs.

• Kiendra Chester had 17 kills and Chantelle Zamora added 10 kills and 14 digs as Walla Walla (13-7, 2-1) beat Community Colleges of Spokane (16-9, 2-1) in a Northwest Athletic Conference match at Spokane Falls Community Colleges. Scores were 22-25, 27-25, 28-26 and 25-22.

CCS’ Korrie Stephenson and Jenna Widman combined for 27 kills.

Junior hockey

The Sicamous Eagles (4-3-0-0) scored twice in the third period and came from behind to beat the Spokane Braves (3-3-0-1) 3-2 in a KIJHL game at Eagles Ice-A-Rena in Spokane.

Women’s rowing

Gonzaga finished 12 seconds faster than Washington State in the varsity eight race at the Head of the Pend Oreille on the Pend Oreille River in Priest River. WSU won the varsity four race.
