Man denies shooting girlfriend

Cameron D. Keith, who was on the run from police for more than a week, has denied shooting his girlfriend, Christen DeMars, in the abdomen. Keith, 28, told police this week that he and DeMars were alone in their Hillyard apartment at 2928 E. Diamond the morning of March 24, according to court records. He said he was sitting on the edge of the bed while DeMars lay down behind him. Keith told police he fell asleep sitting up after he injected heroin. Keith said he woke up when he heard a gun shot. He told police DeMars was still sleeping, but woke up and grabbed her abdomen after he yelled her name. There were two guns on the bed but Keith said neither he nor DeMars fired a gun. “Keith said that maybe DeMars had rolled onto one of the guns while lying on the bed and the gun went off accidentally,” court records say. Police have filed a search warrant to seize the mattress and all the bedding for testing. Keith was arrested on an unrelated warrant early Thursday morning.
