Obituary: Metcalf, Eursel

Age 84

METCALF, Eursel (Age 84) Was born in Pryse, Kentucky on November 11, 1930.

Eursel passed away on April 3, 2015 due to cancer.

Eursel’s parents, Arthur and Katherine Metcalf preceded him in death as well as Eursel’s grandson Adam John Metcalf.

Eursel is survived by Ruby, his loving wife of 62 years.

He is also survived by his children, Katherine (Ken) Noon of Kent, Keith (Kim) Metcalf of Spokane Valley, Deborah (Rick) McBride, of Wenatchee; grandchildren Ryan (Sarah) Metcalf, Tara (Ryan) Downie, Kara Fiest, Kristopher Noon, Danny McBride, Jennifer (Justin) Austel, Kayla McBride, and Amanda McBride, as well as being blessed with seven great-grandchildren.

He was the second of seven siblings and survived by Thurston (Mabel) Metcalf, Betty Shellhorn, Wanda (Frank) Hyde, Rita (Dean) Sperow, John (Gail) Metcalf, and Kay (Dennis) Case, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Eursel, after being raised in Kentucky, joined the Air Force stationed at Fairchild where he met the love of his life, Ruby, and married on August 3, 1952.

They built their family home in Spokane Valley.

After serving four years in the service including one year in Korea, he was employed by Spokane County Road Department as a mechanic, machinist, and eventual supervisor during his 33 year career.

After retirement in 1987, Eursel and Ruby moved to the Spokane River where he built their retirement home.

Shortly after his retirement from the County, Eursel went to work for his longtime friend as a mechanic at Arnold Drilling and Blasting.

Eursel and Ruby began a woodcraft business called E&R Creations where Eursel would create the wood pieces and Ruby would tole paint.

Eursel loved working on anything that needed fixing, helping family and friends with any and all projects.

Eursel loved living at the river where he enjoyed boating, tinkering in the shop, gardening, and enjoying family and friends.

He was an active member of Spokane Valley Baptist Church since 1956 and helped build the church on McDonald Road.

For the past 14 years Eursel and Ruby enjoyed their winters in a park in Yuma, AZ where they enjoyed many friends and golf.

A memorial service celebrating Eursel’s life is being held at Spokane Valley Baptist Church at 1222 South McDonald Road on Saturday, April 11, 2015 at 1:00 PM.

Memorials in lieu of flowers are encouraged and can be sent in his honor to Hospice House of North Idaho, Spokane Valley Baptist Church, or Ross Point Camp in Post Falls, Idaho.
