Bailey pitches Gonzaga to 1-0 win

Brandon Bailey threw a four-hit shutout and Gonzaga beat Saint Mary’s 1-0 in a West Coast Conference baseball game played in Spokane on Sunday.

Bailey (6-1) walked four and struck out nine. He had his regular start on Friday pushed back two games after coming down with strep throat.

Taylor Jones hit a home run in the third inning for the Bulldogs (18-17, 8-7), who swept the three-game series from the Gaels (19-16, 6-9). Jones had two of Gonzaga’s seven hits.

• Pacific bounced back after being swept in a Saturday doubleheader to take two from Whitworth on Sunday in Forest Grove, Oregon.

The Boxers (15-18, 9-12 Northwest) won 4-2 and 6-5. The second game counts as a nonconference contest.

The Pirates (22-13, 13-8 NWC) are in third place with three games remaining. The top four teams play in the conference tournament. Whitworth is host to Willamette in its final regular-season series next weekend.

Cory Mack (3-3) took the loss in the first game despite striking out a career-high 12 batters in 7 2/3 innings.

In the second game, Whitworth rallied to tie after trailing by five runs but the Boxers broke the deadlock in the eighth and held on to win. JT Phelan (0-2) got the loss.

Garrett Hughes had two hits in each game for Whitworth. Matthew Nelson homered in the opener for the Pirates. It was his fourth.

Softball

Whitworth split a doubleheader with Linfield to remain atop the Northwest Conference standings heading into next weekend’s final regular-season games.

Linfield (25-11, 14-10) took the first game in McMinnville, Oregon, scoring three runs over the final two innings for a 4-3 victory in eight innings. Grace Middlestadt scored on a squeeze bunt to cap the Wildcats’ rally from a 3-0 deficit. Madi Perez (13-6) went the distance in taking the loss.

The Pirates used a four-run first inning to win the nightcap 4-1 behind Malayla Lefever’s complete game. Lefever (14-2) gave up eight hits but no walks while striking out six.

The Pirates (27-9, 18-6) hold a one-game lead over George Fox and Pacific and finish the regular season by hosting Lewis & Clark.

• A nine-run third inning sent the Arizona Wildcats (33-10, 8-4 Pac-12) on to a six-inning, 18-10 victory over the Washington Huskies (35-11, 7-7) in Tucson, Arizona. Four Wildcats hit home runs in an 18-hit attack.

Golf

The Whitworth men’s team scored a 17-stroke victory at 48-over 608 in the two-day Northwest Conference Spring Classic at Lake Sapanaway (Washington) Golf Course. Samson Martinez of Whitworth lost to Linfield’s Taylor Klopp in a playoff after both tied in regulation at 7-over 147.

The Whitworth women’s team posted a school-record 18-hole team score of 307 and tied Whitman for first place at 53-over 629. Chelsea Bayley led the Pirates, tying for second place at 9-over 153. Phoebe Nguyen of Whitman shot even-par 144.

Both Pirates teams are in the thick of their conference races. The NWC Championship Tournament, coming up in two weeks, counts for 50 percent of the points toward the league title.

Arenacross

Kyle Regal extended his points lead by earning his series-leading sixth win in the Amsoil Arenacross race held in the Spokane Arena on Saturday night. Regal finished third in the first main event and was second in the second main event to take the overall win. His Husqvarna teammate Gavin Faith finished second, while Kawasaki rider Chris Blose finished third.
