Area roundup: Five-run second sparks Bulldogs

Four hits, five runs, and one inning.

Add that up and it equals a victory for the Gonzaga Bulldogs’ baseball team.

Gonzaga scored five runs, thanks to three second-inning doubles, en route to a 5-3 West Coast Conference win over Portland on Friday night at Joe Etzel Field in Portland.

Andrew Sopko pitched 6 2/3 solid innings allowing three runs, and David Bigelow earned his eighth save of the season leading the Bulldogs (19-17, 9-7) to their 13th straight victory over the Pilots (7-33, 2-14).

• Cameron Frost’s ninth-inning sacrifice fly capped a Washington State Cougars’ 4-3 come-from-behind victory over San Jose State at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman.

The Cougars (19-18) scored three runs in the ninth inning, sparked by back-to-back extra basehits by Shane Matheny and Cooper Elliott.

• Braden Bishop had three RBIs, Branden Berry and Will Sparks each drove in two and the Washington Huskies (21-14, 7-9) used three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to come back on No. 7 Arizona State (23-11, 11-5) defeating the Sun Devils 9-7 in a Pac-12 game at Seattle.

• Gonzaga’s Shelby Mills and Willie Milam both broke school records at the Mt. SAC Relays.

Milam bested the men’s 10,000-meter record becoming the first Bulldog to finish in less than 30 minutes.

• Whitworth senior Joe Green broke his own school pole vault record at the Whitworth Twilight meet on Thursday when he vaulted 17-feet, shattering his prior record of 16 3/4 set last season.
