Area roundup: Dan Ramsay leaving Whitworth baseball team after season for position with Washington State Cougars

Whitworth baseball coach Dan Ramsay, who guided the Pirates to the 2012 Division III College World Series, announced his resignation Tuesday to accept a position on the staff at Washington State.

The move will take place at the conclusion of Whitworth’s season.

Ramsay, who also played baseball at Whitworth, will be WSU’s director of baseball operations.

Ramsay has a 126-149-2 record in his seven seasons with the Pirates.

Golf

The Washington State Cougars women sit in last place after the second round of the Pac-12 Championships at Boulder Country Club in Boulder, Colorado.

Oregon and UCLA are tied for first place at 5-over-par 573. Arizona (6-over) and Washington (8-over) round out the top four. WSU is at 604.

• The Idaho Vandals women placed third and the Eastern Washington Eagles tied for eighth at the conclusion of the Big Sky Conference Championships in Chandler, Arizona.

The Vandals – led by Leilanie Kim’s 7-over 223 that tied her for fourth place – finished three shots behind winner Northern Arizona (901). Sac State (903) was second.

EWU (932) was led by Marissa Borja’s 229 – tying her for 19th place.

Portland State’s A Ram Choi was the repeat medalist with an even-par 216.

Tennis

Katie Edwards made history for the Gonzaga women when she became the first Bulldog to earn All-West Coast Conference first-team honors. She posted a 12-7 mark in WCC play at No. 1 singles.

On the men’s side, Alvaro Nazal, who was 25-10 overall in singles and 11-7 in doubles, earned All-WCC first-team honors. Teammate Nick Kamisar was honorable mention.

• EWU’s Robert Dula netted the final Big Sky player of the week honors. He helped the Eagles earn a 4-3 win over Idaho by winning his No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles matches.

Softball

The CC Spokane Sasquatch and visiting North Idaho Cardinals split a nonconference doubleheader with the Sasquatch (31-4) winning the opener 1-0 on Berkley Fisher’s walk-off run-scoring single. The Cardinals (28-4) won the nightcap 8-2 behind Miranda Powless’ three-hitter.
