In brief: Helmet giveaway planned Saturday

SPOKANE VALLEY – The Spokane Valley Kiwanis are sponsoring a Paint a Helmet event at the Spokane Fair and Expo Center on Saturday.

Children 3 to 15 will be fitted with a helmet they can customize.

The event runs 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the fairgrounds, 404 N. Havana St.

Also Saturday at the fairgrounds, Safe Kids Spokane is sponsoring a free car seat checkup from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Bring the child and the car seat and have a technician check if the seat is the right size and if it’s installed correctly.

Tree planting set west of Kendall

SPOKANE – Spokane members of the American Society of Landscape Architects along with landscape designers, contractors, volunteers and city staff will be participating in a tree planting project Friday in observance of Arbor Day.

Up to 350 Ponderosa pine seedlings will be planted along the north bank of the Spokane River west of Kendall Yards between 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Volunteers meet up at a parking lot in the 2800 block of West Clark Avenue next to the Sandifur Memorial Bridge.

Afterward a city Arbor Day event will be at 2 p.m. in the Chase Gallery on the lower level of City Hall.

Arbor Day event planned at Finch

SPOKANE – Parks and Recreation’s Urban Forestry Department is sponsoring an Arbor Day celebration at Finch Arboretum on Saturday.

The free event is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be children’s activities, composting information, and the arborists’ big rigs.

The arboretum is at 3404 W. Woodland Blvd.
