In brief: Ex-Spokane County deputy prosecutor loses law license for two years

From Staff Reports

The former Spokane County deputy prosecutor who avoided jail time after pleading guilty to aiding a convicted felon has been barred from practicing law in the state for two years.

Marriya Wright received a suspended sentence and was ordered to serve 60 hours of community service in November after pleading guilty to rendering criminal assistance. Investigators allege Wright helped Matthew Baumrucker avoid capture and visited him several times while in custody at the Spokane County Jail, though he wasn’t her client. Jail staff found a photo of Wright, who is a bodybuilder, in a bikini in Baumrucker’s cell.

The state Supreme Court issued an order on Thursday suspending Wright’s law license for two years. After she pleaded guilty, Wright’s lawyer said she’d like to return to practicing law.

Man gets 10 years for role in robbery

A Bonners Ferry man was sentenced Tuesday to 10 years in federal prison for his role in an ATM robbery that ended in a highway shootout with police in January 2014.

Matthew T. Annable, 40, pleaded guilty in April to charges stemming from the theft in McCall, Idaho. He and Nathan P. Davenport were arrested carrying about $38,000 in cash several days after the McCall robbery, during which Davenport fired an assault rifle at officers in pursuit. Investigators later linked the pair to a string of robberies in Florida, Texas, Colorado and other states dating back to October 2012. The pair are believed to have stolen more than $527,000 in that time.

No one was injured in the shooting outside McCall. Davenport also pleaded guilty to charges and was sentenced to 18 years in prison. Both men have been in federal custody since their arrest in Utah a few days after the McCall theft.

Man accused of attack on two

A Spokane man accused of trying to stab his girlfriend and father in a home Monday is in jail facing assault charges.

Police believe Brian N. Olson, 30, came into the couple’s bedroom, threatened his girlfriend with a knife and said he was going to steal her money and take her life, according to court documents. After nearly two hours, she was able to leave the room.

Later in the day, she was sleeping downstairs when he woke her up holding a knife and bat and punched her in the face, court documents say.

Olson’s father was in the house and told police his son threatened to kill them both and burn down the home.

He told police his son head-butted him and tried to stab his girlfriend in the abdomen. He was able to get the bat away from his son and hit him with it, causing him to drop the knife, according to court documents.

His girlfriend told police that she’s tried to call a shelter in the past, but her boyfriend keeps getting her phone before she can complete the screening process, court records say.

Olson was booked into jail on two counts of first-degree assault and unlawful imprisonment. His bond was set at $20,000 during a brief court appearance Tuesday.
