Area roundup: Vandals roll to 3-0 women’s soccer victory

Olivia Baggerly, Kayla Watanabe and Kaitlyn Joy scored in Idaho’s 3-0 soccer victory over New Mexico State in Moscow, Idaho, on Friday.

Clara Gomez had three of the six assists by the Vandals (2-1-0). Amanda Poertner saved seven shots against the Aggies (0-3-0).

• Simone Charley’s second goal of the match, coming in overtime, lifted Vanderbilt (1-2-0) to a 3-2 win over Gonzaga (0-1-1) in Spokane.

Karley Baggerly scored two second-half goals to bring the Bulldogs back from a 2-0 deficit, getting the second in the 90th minute to force overtime.

• Chloe Williams scored at 89:50 to prevent a loss for Eastern Washington as the Eagles (2-0-1) finished in a 1-1 tie with Cal State Bakersfield (1-0-1) in Cheney. The Roadrunners got their goal in the 87th minute.

Volleyball

Washington State split its opening matches of the season at the Radford (Virginia) Highlander Invitational.

The Cougars lost to Radford 25-19, 24-26, 26-24, 25-22 in their first match before coming back to defeat Elon 25-18, 25-17, 26-24. They conclude play in the tournament today against Tennessee State.

In the victory, McKenna Woodford led the Cougars with a .370 hitting percentage on 27 attempts.

• Gonzaga opened its season with a 25-19, 25-23, 25-15 loss to Washington in the Zags’ Northwest Challenge tournament being played at Martin Centre in Spokane.

The Bulldogs were led by Savannah Blinn’s 14 kills but hit only .130 as a team.

Courtney Swan had 12 kills and hit at a .500 clip to lead the Huskies and help give Keegan Cook his first head-coaching victory.

The tournament concludes today. Gonzaga will play Portland State at 10 a.m. and Boise State at 6 p.m.

Washington plays Boise State at noon and Portland State at 4 p.m.

• North Idaho College swept Evergreen State College before topping host Lewis-Clark State 18-25, 25-22, 25-22, 26-24, in its second match. Julia Borges had a .304 hitting percentage on 23 attempts for the Cardinals in the win. Tournament play continues today.

• Eastern Washington lost its opener to Seattle 25-15, 25-12, 25-16 at the Molten Classic in Berkeley, California.

The Eagles finished with a team hitting percentage of .000 with 23 kills and 23 errors. They will play host Cal and Nevada today.

• CC Spokane went 1-2 in its first three matches of the year, played at the Chemeketa Preseason Tournament in Salem.

CCS opened with a 26-28, 25-16, 15-11 loss to Linn-Benton, defeated Clackamas 25-17, 27-25 and fell to Bellevue 25-16, 25-17.

The Sasquatch will play Blue Mountain this morning in the consolation semifinals.

Men’s soccer

Beau Blanchard headed in a goal at 46:56 and Washington shut out Gonzaga 1-0 in Seattle. Herman made five saves in the victory for the 10th-ranked Huskies (2-0-0). The Bulldogs (0-2-0) outshot Washington 10-8 but the Huskies scored on one of just two shots they put on goal.

• Whitworth topped the Northwest Conference preseason coaches’ poll, getting four of eight first-place votes. Following Whitworth, which reached the sectional semifinals of the NCAA Division III tournament last year, are Pacific Lutheran, Willamette, Puget Sound, Pacific, Linfield, Whitman and George Fox.
