Take lessons from holiday

To the Spokane/Coeur d’Alene Jewish community: I want to wish you a Happy Chanukah. For those who don’t know, Chanukah is the commemoration of a miraculous event. It’s primary focus is not on gifts, but on family.

The rest of us could take some lessons. While you are busy scampering about, try to keep focused on the real meaning of Christmas. It won’t be easy.

Our obsession with things is just one more result of turning our collective backs on God. There was a time when people were content to get their news from weekly newspapers. Now, most people want news to be instantaneous. The family television set has been replaced by electronic gadgets designed to isolate.

Our lack of spirituality has contributed to the bringing about of several massacres. Phishing scams and identity theft are both brainchildren of unscrupulous individuals too lazy to make an honest living.
