Prosser defeats Tumwater for State 2A football title

AP

TACOMA – Prosser junior quarterback Tanner Bolt threw three touchdown passes – all in the first half – and the Mustangs held on to beat Tumwater 22-15 in the State 2A championship football game on Saturday at the Tacoma Dome.

Defensive end Riley Luck recovered a fumble by Tumwater quarterback Spencer Dowers at the Prosser 10-yard line with 30 seconds left in the game after the Thunderbirds had first-and-goal at the 10. Dowers was running up the middle when Kolby Swift knocked the ball away from him.

Tumwater (13-1) recovered a fumble by Bolt after a low snap with 1:09 left at the Prosser 37 to set up the potential tying score. Dowers completed a 15-yard pass to Noah Andrews on a fourth-down play to move the ball to the 10.

Bolt completed 21 of 35 passes for 280 yards to help Prosser (13-1) win its fifth title and first since 2007. He completed 14 of 20 passes for 213 yards and three touchdowns to give the Mustangs a 22-8 halftime lead.

Prosser stopped two Tumwater scoring threats with interceptions in the third quarter. Michael Kernan picked off a pass in the end zone midway through the quarter and Roy Borrego had a pick at the 2 with 25 seconds left in the quarter.

Tumwater, which threw four interceptions and lost a fumble, had hoped to win its fifth title and first since 2010. Andrews rushed for 89 yards on 13 carries to lead the Thunderbirds.
