That’s News to you answers

Here are the answers to this week’s quiz:

1. C. Known worldwide as “Mr. Cub,” Ernie Banks became the Chicago Cubs’ first African-American player on Sept. 17, 1953, and went on to become an 11-time All-Star and two-time National League Most Valuable Player (1958 and 1959).

2. D. Covering return postage for the state’s all-mail balloting would cost about $1 million for a presidential election and about $2.7 million for the next two years, a Senate committee was told.

But supporters of a proposal to do just that say it would make voting more convenient and remove a possible barrier for poor residents. “Of all the barriers (to voting), being poor should not be one of them,” said Sen. Bob Hasegawa, D-Seattle.

3. C. Scott Chesney, Spokane’s planning director, was dismissed in November for what was described as a misuse of city funds. Days later, Jan Quintrall, who had been Chesney’s boss, used a city credit card to spend more than $400 on lunch at the Spokane Club for a dozen city employees.

It was the third such known expenditure of the year for Quintrall, though the other two were less than half of what Quintrall spent for the “team-building” exercise in November.

4. B. Pangos’ 289th 3-pointer eclipsed the Zag record of 288 held by Blake Stepp.

5. D. Proposed rules banning smoking were presented at a public forum on the Pullman campus. The rules would ban “all forms of tobacco and any nicotine-delivery devices, including electronic cigarettes, in or on WSU Pullman campus grounds and state-owned vehicles and equipment.”
