In brief: No. 1 Kentucky holds off LSU

College men: Willie Cauley-Stein scored 15 points and top-ranked Kentucky stayed unbeaten with another tough road win, 71-69 over LSU when the Tigers missed a 3-pointer that could have won it at the buzzer Tuesday night at Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Devin Booker added 14 points and Aaron Harrison had 13 for the Wildcats (24-0, 11-0 Southeastern Conference) who can tie a school record for the best start to a season by winning at home on Saturday against South Carolina.

Trailing by two with roughly 6 seconds left, LSU (17-7, 6-5) got the ball to Keith Hornsby on the wing, who missed an off-balanced 3-pointer that bounced harmlessly off the rim at the buzzer.

Irish edge Clemson: Jerian Grant scored 22 points and Demetrius Jackson hit the tying and go-ahead baskets as Notre Dame (22-4, 10-3 ACC) outlasted Clemson 60-58 at Clemson, South Carolina.

The Tigers (14-10, 6-6) missed two shots at the end, including a 3-pointer by Damarcus Harrison that hit off the rim as time ran out.

Dekker powers Badgers: Sam Dekker matched his career high with 21 points, and No. 5 Wisconsin (22-2, 10-1) built a big lead early and then held off a Nebraska (13-11, 5-7) late comeback bid for a 65-55 victory at Lincoln, Nebraska.

Tarkanian ailing: Family members say Hall of Fame basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian is hospitalized in Las Vegas with breathing trouble and some type of infection.

Son Danny Tarkanian characterized his father’s condition as “minute by minute.”

Tarkanian led three schools to the NCAA tournament, including the 1990 UNLV team that won a national title.

Pau Gasol double trouble for opponents

NBA: Pau Gasol continued his strong play with 26 points and 16 rebounds, Tony Snell had a career-high 24 and Derrick Rose added 23 to lead host Chicago to a 104-86 rout of Sacramento.

It was Gasol’s NBA-best 34th double-double of the season. He now has 13 straight.

Randolph, Marc Gasol lead Memphis: Zach Randolph had 19 points, Marc Gasol added 14 and 11 rebounds and host Memphis ruined the return of former coach Lionel Hollins with a 95-86 victory over Brooklyn.

Memphis won its 14th of the last 16.

Harden scores 40 for Rockets: James Harden scored 20 of his 40 points in the fourth quarter and visiting Houston pulled away to beat Phoenix Suns 127-118. Houston has won seven of nine.

Monroe propels Pistons: Greg Monroe had 23 points and 12 rebounds, D.J. Augustin added 18 points and Detroit handed host Charlotte its third straight loss.

Monroe had 14 double-doubles in January to tie a franchise record.

Korver added: Atlanta’s Kyle Korver was selected to replace Miami’s injured Dwyane Wade in Sunday’s All-Star game.

Korver, who turns 34 next month, is the fourth-oldest player to make his first All-Star appearance.

Neal’s OT goal lifts Nashville over Tampa

NHL: James Neal scored at 4:27 of overtime to give host Nashville to a 3-2 victory over Tampa Bay.

Seth Jones and Taylor Beck also scored for Nashville, which has won three straight and five of its past six.

Winnipeg snaps Minnesota win streak: Dustin Byfuglien scored on a breakaway at 4:00 of overtime and Winnipeg ended visiting Minnesota’s six-game winning streak with a 2-1 victory.

Benn, Daley each score twice for Stars: Jamie Benn and Trevor Daley scored two goals apiece, and Kari Lehtonen stopped 41 shots for visiting Dallas in a 5-3 win over Boston.

Vernon Fiddler also scored for Dallas, ending Boston’s run as the only remaining NHL team that hadn’t allowed a short-handed goal this season when he scored unassisted 7:28 into the game.

Terps top Rutgers for 16th straight win

College women: Lexie Brown scored 19 points, Shatori Walker-Kimbrough added 17 and No. 5 Maryland (22-2, 13-0) remained unbeaten in the Big Ten with its 16th consecutive victory, 80-69 over No. 18 Rutgers (18-6, 9-4) at College Park, Maryland.

The victory moved the Terrapins one step closer to becoming the first team since Purdue in 1998-99 to finish with an unblemished record in Big Ten play. Maryland’s last loss was against Notre Dame on Dec. 3.

U.S. draws Italy in Fed Cup playoffs

Tennis: The U.S. will have to beat Italy in Italy for the first time in 16 years to return to the top tier of the Fed Cup.

Italy and the Americans were drawn in the World Group playoffs from April 18-19.

In other pairings, the Netherlands will host Australia, Poland will play at home against Switzerland, and Canada will welcome Romania.
