Freeman boys get overtime victory over Newport to stay alive in District 1A

Ryan Maine led four players in double figures with 18 points and Freeman held Newport scoreless in overtime and beat the Grizzlies 63-58 in a District 7 1A boys loser-out game Saturday at Freeman.

The Scotties’ Jack Paukert added 14 points, Christian Phillips had 11 and Matt Harris chipped in 10, including four of Freeman’s five points in overtime.

Newport (11-10) fell behind 24-13 after the first quarter, but chipped away. The Grizzlies went on an 18-11 fourth-quarter run to force overtime. Newport’s Joshua Smith scored six points in the fourth and Ty McDaniel made three crucial free throws late.

McDaniel finished with 18 points and 14 rebounds and Smith 12 points.

Freeman (12-9) will play top-seeded Lakeside at West Valley on Tuesday.

Riverside 52, Deer Park 42: Tyler Axtell had 21 points, 10 rebounds and five assists and the Rams (17-5) surged in the fourth and beat the upset-minded Stags (7-14) at Riverside. The Rams trailed by six entering the final quarter, but outscored Deer Park 24-8 to avoid elimination. Riverside’s Brandon Morris and Andrew Kramer added 13 points apiece, and both scored nine points in the fourth. The Stags’ Daniel Paulson and Nate Guske scored 14 and 12, respectively.

The Rams will play Medical Lake on Tuesday at West Valley.

District 7 1B

Curlew 65, Wellpinit 60: Cody Grumbach scored 22 points and Aaron McCullough added 20 points and 11 rebounds as the Cougars (18-4) surged in the fourth and beat the Redskins in Deer Park. The win gave Curlew a berth to the regional tournament. The Cougars will play Almira/Coulee-Hartline in Saturday’s title game in Deer Park to determine the top two seeds to regionals. Wellpinit (17-5) will play Cusick on Wednesday in Deer Park in a loser-out game.

Almira/Coulee-Hartline 46, Odessa-Harrington 43: Payton Neilsen had 15 points and 20 rebounds and Dawson Dormaier added 13 points, including a pair of crucial 3-pointers late in the fourth, and the Warriors (18-4) edged the Titans (12-10) in Deer Park. Odessa-Harrington’s Shane Whitaker and Carsen Weber combined for 29 points. The Titans will play Selkirk in a loser-out game Wednesday in Deer Park.

Cusick 62, Northport 56: Alec Bluff had 23 points and 12 rebounds and the Panthers (13-9) made 8 of 10 fourth-quarter free throws to get past the Mustangs (9-13) in Deer Park. Northport’s Vithor Martin tallied a team-high 19 points.

Selkirk 42, Valley Christian 29: Dominic Cain had 21 points and 12 rebounds as the Rangers (13-9) stayed alive with a win over the Panthers (3-17) in Deer Park. Cole Dawson had 10 points and eight rebounds for Selkirk. Braydon Oliver had a team-high 10 points for Valley Christian, which was eliminated.

District 9 1B

Garfield-Palouse 74, Colton 52: Tyler Thurman scored 28 points and the Vikings (20-1) claimed a spot in the title game with a win over the visiting Wildcats (11-7). The Vikings will play Pomeroy in Clarkston in Friday for district title. The Pirates won 49-43 over Liberty Christian. Colton plays Touchet on Tuesday in Clarkston in a loser-out game.

District 7 2A

Pullman 39, Cheney 36: Emily Drake’s buzzer-beating 3-pointer gave the Greyhounds (12-10) a win over the Blackhawks (6-16) in a loser-out game at Lincoln Middle School in Pullman. The Greyhounds will play at top-seeded East Valley on Tuesday to determine seeding to regionals.

District 7 1B

Republic 48, Wellpinit 37: Shania Graham had 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists and Demi Jo Vaughn added 13 points and nine boards as the Tigers (22-0) pulled away after halftime and beat the Redskins (15-7) in Deer Park. The Tigers play Odessa-Harrington Saturday in Deer Park to determine the top two seeds to regionals. Wellpinit will play Selkirk on Wednesday in Deer Park in a loser-out game.

Odessa-Harrington 35, Almira/Coulee-Hartline 33: The Titans (11-11) used a 14-7 fourth-quarter rally to get past the Warriors (16-5) in Deer Park. Jordan Tanke had a team-high eight points and Katie DeWulf pulled down 10 rebounds for O-H. ACH’s Brenna Oliver tallied a game-high 16 points, including 11 in the second quarter. The Warriors will play Valley Christian in a loser-out game Wednesday in Deer Park.

Valley Christian 50, Cusick 45: Phoebe Trigsted scored 13 points and Kendra Pope pulled down 10 rebounds as Valley Christian (4-17) kept its season alive with a win over Cusick (7-12) in Deer Park. Cusick, which was eliminated, got a game-high 17 points from Renee Wynne.

Selkirk 38, Curlew 33: Lexi Ellsworth scored 15 points and Hannah Rick added 11 points, 11 rebounds and five steals as the Rangers (10-13) avenged two regular-season losses to the Cougars (12-10) with a win in Deer Park. Curlew’s Lindsay Gibson and Kayleona Fanning scored 15 and 10, respectively. The Cougars were eliminated.
