Area roundup: Joel Filani joins WSU football staff

Washington State football coach Mike Leach announced Wednesday that Joel Filani has joined the Cougars’ staff in an offensive quality control position.

Filani spent the last two seasons as an offensive graduate assistant at Boise State where he primarily worked with wide receivers.

Filani was a wide receiver in college under Leach at Texas Tech from 2003-06, earning first-team All-Big 12 honors his final two seasons.

Filani played three seasons in the NFL with six teams from 2007-09, including the Seattle Seahawks. He also played with the Chicago Rush of the Arena Football League in 2011.

Men’s golf

James Fahy tied for 38th place and the Gonzaga Bulldogs finished 13th in the 14-team Prestige at PGA West in La Quinta, California.

The Bulldogs totaled 888 strokes to finish just ahead of the Oregon Ducks.

Arizona State (31-under-par 833) took the team title, four strokes ahead of runner-up Stanford. Maverick McNealy of Stanford was the medalist with a 15-under 201 total.

Basketball

Dean Richey totaled 29 points and 10 rebounds and West Valley grad Jake Love scored 29 and had a four-point play that sparked a late run as Community Colleges of Spokane (17-9, 7-4) posted a 98-87 win over the visiting Walla Walla Warriors (12-14. 4-7) in Northwest Athletic Conference action at Spokane Falls CC.

Love added eight rebounds, while Richey tallied five assists and three blocked shots.

• Kennedy Corrigan tossed in a game-high 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds to propel the visiting Walla Walla Warriors (18-5, 9-2 NWAC) to a 58-52 victory over the Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch (14-13, 3-8) at SFCC.

Khadija Neumeyer led the Sasquatch with 17 points.
