Gonzaga bats lead sweep of UC Davis

The Gonzaga bats came alive Saturday and the Bulldogs baseball team turned it into a doubleheader-sweep of UC Davis in Davis, California.

GU pounded out 18 hits in the opener and cruised to a 13-4 win. Sam Brown had three hits and drove in four runs and Justin Jacobs had three hits, including the game’s only home run, and scored three times.

Andrew Sopko picked up his first win after giving up two runs on seven hits in six innings.

In the nightcap, Gonzaga catcher Troy LaBrie hit his first career home run – a two-run shot in the second inning – and the Bulldogs cruised to an 8-2 win. LaBrie finished with four RBIs and Brown added three more hits and scored twice.

GU starter Calvin LeBrun went eight innings, giving up two runs on seven hits.

• Washington State (4-3) scored four runs in the seventh and beat Kansas (2-4) 8-5 at the Big-12/Pac-12 Challenge in Surprise, Arizona.

The Cougars’ P.J. Jones started the seventh-inning rally with a two-run double. Jack Strunc added two hits and two runs for WSU.

• Whitworth (4-3) picked up two nonconference wins against Schreiner (2-7) in Kerrville, Texas, in two very different ways.

The Pirates were masterful on the mound in the opener and edged the Mountaineers 1-0. Dan Scheibe pitched six innings, giving up three hits and a walk while striking out 10.

In the nightcap, the Pirates racked up 15 hits and cruised to a 14-5 win. Whitworth’s Garrett Hughes had three hits, including a three-run home run, and six RBIs.

Track and field

Washington State’s Jesse Jorgensen took second place in the men’s 800 meters at the Alex Wilson Invitational in Notre Dame, Indiana. He finished in 1 minute, 49.83 seconds, a season best.

Abby Regan represented the Cougar women with a sixth-place finish in the mile. She crossed in 4:47.96.

Junior hockey

The Spokane Braves scored twice in each period and beat the Castlegar Rebels 6-3 in a KIJHL game in Castlegar, British Columbia.

Keith Anderson, Lance Noomen, Kyle Davis, Paxton Malone, Tanner Stolz and Kurtis Redding all scored for Spokane.
