COMING UP: Tonight vs. Idaho State, 7 p.m.; Saturday vs. Weber State, 7 p.m.

OUTLOOK: The Vandals are jumping into Big Sky Conference play for the first time since 1996 this weekend, albeit against opponents that will seem familiar. Idaho has played, and beaten, Idaho State over the last two seasons. Idaho coach Don Verlin was an assistant coach for 15 years with Weber State’s Randy Rahe when the two were at Colorado State and Utah State. This weekend’s slate is at Idaho’s Cowan Spectrum, where Verlin is preaching to his team the importance of getting off to a good start in conference play. Big Sky favorite Eastern Washington comes to the Cowan Spectrum on Jan. 10.
