Pac-12: Huskies lose conference opener to California

Associated Press

Jordan Mathews scored 31 points and knocked down three of his career-high five 3-pointers in the second half, leading California to an 81-75 victory over No. 21 Washington on Friday night in Berkeley, California.

It was the Pac-12 opener for both teams.

David Kravish had a career-high 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Golden Bears, who had lost consecutive games for the first time under new coach Cuonzo Martin.

Nigel Williams-Goss had 19 points, eight rebounds and nine assists and Robert Upshaw added 16 points, eight boards and five blocks for Lorenzo Romar’s Huskies, who lost their second straight. Washington has dropped the last three against Cal (11-3, 1-0 Pac-12).

Quevyn Winters missed an open 3 with 13 seconds left that would have made it a one-possession game. The Huskies (11-2, 0-1), ranked No. 13 in the previous poll, were stunned 62-57 at home by Stony Brook last Sunday.

Colorado 62, UCLA 56: Askia Booker scored 20 points, including a pair of free throws in the final seconds, and the Buffaloes hung on to defeat the Bruins in Boulder, Colorado.

It was Colorado’s first win over the Bruins since 1962.

Xavier Johnson added 14 points and Wesley Gordon had 11 points and 14 rebounds for Colorado (8-5, 1-0 Pac-12), which overcame the absence of star forward Josh Scott. He missed the game because of back spasms.

The victory was Colorado’s first in five tries against UCLA since joining the Pac-12 four years ago. It was Colorado’s second victory in 10 meetings all-time against UCLA. The Buffaloes’ only previous victory over UCLA came on Dec. 7, 1962 (82-60).

Norman Powell had 22 points to lead UCLA (8-6, 0-1), which lost its fourth in a row. Isaac Hamilton added 16 points.

(10) Utah 79, USC 55: Jordan Loveridge scored 14 points to lead the Utes over the Trojans at Salt Lake City.

Delon Wright had 11 points and 10 assists and Brandon Taylor added 11 points as Utah (11-2, 1-0) shot 57 percent.

Loveridge missed seven games after knee surgery but he has returned to provide scoring punch to an offense that struggles to score at times. He made three 3-pointers and a couple of drives to the hoop.

Malik Martin and Nikola Jovanovic each scored 14 for USC (8-5, 0-1).
