WCC roundup: Saint Mary’s escapes with win over Pacific

Associated Press

Brad Waldow scored 21 points and pulled down 11 rebounds on Saturday night, and Saint Mary’s took advantage of a late technical foul to escape with a 54-47 win over Pacific in Stockton, California.

After Waldow secured a defensive rebound with the Gaels leading 48-47 and less than 30 seconds left, Pacific’s Gabriel Aguirre was called for a foul and then hit with a technical after the play.

Waldow made 1 of 2 and Aaron Bright made both technical free throws, giving Saint Mary’s a four-point lead and the ball.

San Francisco 89, Portland 77: Kruize Pinkins threw down a dunk – and earned a technical foul – with 17 seconds to go as the Dons held on to defeat the Pilots in Portland, breaking a four-game skid.

Portland closed with a spurt of six straight field goals – including two 3-pointers by D’Marques Tyson inside the final minute – as the Pilots mounted a late rally.

Devin Watson scored 21 points for the Dons. Portland was led by Kevin Bailey’s 20 points.

Pepperdine 59, San Diego 47: Stacy Davis scored 18 points – 13 of those in the first half – and the Waves beat the cold-shooting Toreros in San Diego.

Davis was the only player to score in double figures, finishing 5 of 8 from the floor and 8 of 9 from the free-throw line.

BYU 85, Loyola Marymount 72: Tyler Haws scored 26 and Chase Fischer added 19 points to lead the Cougars over the Lions in Provo, Utah.

Marin Mornar led Loyola Marymount with 16 points.

Evan Payne, LMU’s leading scorer at 20 points per game, did not play due to a violation of team rules.
