Boys basketball: Eagles deal Cardinals first defeat in NEA

Cameron Gay had 17 points and Ryan Quigley added 14 points and 14 rebounds as Lakeside handed Medical Lake its first Northeast A League loss of the season, 57-52, Tuesday night in Medical Lake.

The Eagles (10-2, 5-1) dominated the boards, outrebounding the Cardinals 43-12, including a 24-5 advantage in offensive rebounds.

Leading 46-45 in the fourth, Lakeside grabbed five offensive rebounds to spark a 7-0 run and pull away.

Medical Lake’s Tellas Johnson led three players in double figures with 12 points.

The Cardinals fell to 7-3 overall and 5-1 in the NEA.

Deer Park 76, Newport 71 (OT): Carter Countryman scored 21 points, including five 3-pointers, and Nate Guske chipped in 20 as the Stags (5-7, 3-3) snuck past the host Grizzlies (6-6, 1-5). With the score tied late in the fourth, Newport missed a free throw and a put-back attempt that would have won the game. The Grizzlies then made just 1 of 6 free throws in overtime. Newport’s Tyler Zorica tallied a team-high 21 points.

Riverside 66, Colville 46: Andrew Kramer scored 21 points and Tyler Axtell added 19 as the Rams (11-1, 6-0) defeated the host Indians (1-10, 1-5). Kramer and Axtell combined to make 10 of 12 free throws. Colville’s Dallis Martin tallied a team-high 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting.

Freeman 61, Chewelah 26: Ryan Maine scored 11 of his game-high 17 points in the decisive first quarter as the Scotties (5-6, 3-3) dominated from the get-go in an easy win over the visiting Cougars (1-11, 0-6). Matt Harris added 14 points and Jack Paukert added seven points, six steals and five assists for Freeman, which forced 33 turnovers.

Inland Empire 5A

Lake City 64, Lewiston 40: Quinn Mitchell led a balanced attack with 15 points and seven rebounds and the Timberwolves (7-5, 1-1) leaned on their defense to get past the Bengals in Coeur d’Alene. Collin Hunter and Michael Goggin scored a combined 23 points and Joe Pasquale added nine points and eight boards for LC.

Great Northern

Pullman 60, West Valley 57: Jake Cillay scored 17 points and Micah Lagerquist added 14 points and nine rebounds as the Greyhounds (10-2, 3-1) edged the visiting Eagles (7-4, 2-2). Pullman, which shot 48.9 percent (23 of 47) from the field, got an additional 10 points from A.J. Miles. West Valley’s Dylan Steen led three players in double figures with 11 points.

Clarkston 73, East Valley 62: The Bantams (13-0, 5-0) made five 3s during a 26-6 third-quarter run and beat the host Knights (4-8, 1-3) to keep their perfect record intact. Trevor Sperry scored 18 points on 7-of-15 shooting and Trevon Allen added 17 points on 8-of-13 shooting for Clarkston, which erased a seven-point halftime deficit.

East Valley’s Dante Clayton made 8 of 14 shots, including three 3s, and scored a game-high 19 points.

Northeast 2B

Wilbur-Creston 44, Lind-Ritzville/Sprague 38: Trystan Rosman, Garet Townsend and Dorian Jaeger scored 10 points apiece and the Wildcats (11-3, 6-3) pulled away after halftime and beat the Broncos (9-4, 6-3) in Ritzville. Wilbur-Creston made 17 of 24 free throws. LRS’ Cort Ruzicka had 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Colfax 68, Reardan 46: Kasey Johnson had 23 points and 10 rebounds and the Bulldogs (13-2, 8-1) surged in the second half and dumped the visiting Indians (7-6, 4-4). Reardan’s Brandon Reuben tallied a team-high 17 points and Dan Peone had 14 points and two steals.

St. George’s 52, Springdale 34: Liam Sienko had 11 points and nine rebounds and Collin Cremers added 10 points as the Dragons (9-6, 5-4) topped the visiting Chargers (5-9, 3-7). St. George’s committed just eight turnovers. Springdale’s Justyn Newell tallied a game-high 13 points.

Liberty 78, Kettle Falls 45: Match Burnham scored 23 points and pulled down 12 rebounds as the Lancers (13-1, 8-0) overwhelmed the visiting Bulldogs (0-13, 0-9). Kettle Falls’ Cole Wren tallied a team-high 16 points.

Northwest Christian 58, Tekoa-Rosalia 36: Asher Cox scored 14 points and Rolf Veenstra and Nathan Sander added 11 apiece as the Crusaders (10-4, 7-2) opened the game on a 19-4 run and raced past the Timberwolves (1-13, 1-8) in Rosalia. Tekoa-Rosalia’s Dillon Jacobs tallied a team-high nine points.

Nonleague

Davenport 64, Wellpinit 47: Austin Zeller scored 19 points and Peyton VanPevenage and Layne Smith added 11 apiece as the Gorillas (4-10) topped the visiting Redskins (9-3). Wellpinit’s Jason Holt tallied a team-high 15 points.

Almira/Coulee-Hartline 65, Cusick 47: Dallas Isaak, Charles Hunt and Payton Nielson all scored 16 points and the Warriors (10-2, 5-0) pulled away in the second half and beat the Panthers (7-5, 4-3) in Coulee City. Nielsen also had 11 rebounds. Cusick’s Alec Bluff had 15 points and Cameron Bauer chipped in 14.
