Up 16, Cougs lose to Beavers

Ruth Hamblin scored a career-high 31 points, tied a career best with 16 rebounds and added seven blocks and No. 9 Oregon State overcame a 16-point, second-half deficit to beat Washington State 73-70 Friday night in a Pac-12 Conference game in Corvallis, Oregon.

Jamie Weisner added 25 points and seven rebounds for the Beavers (15-1, 5-0).

Lia Galdeira scored 21 points and Tia Presley added 17 for the Cougars (10-6, 1-4).

Oregon State took 10-2 lead, but the Cougars bounced back with gritty defense, feasting on turnovers. Galdeira’s 3-pointer gave Washington State its first lead at 16-15 with 12:56 left in the half.

Washington State led by as many as 12, and went to the break ahead 39-30. Galdeira’s steal and fast-break layup put the Cougars up by 16 at 50-34 with 16:53 left. The Beavers responded with a 14-2 run. During the last eight minutes, the game turned into a back-and-forth battle with neither team leading by more than three points.

With Washington State trailing 71-69 and 24 seconds remaining, Galdeira was fouled on a layup attempt. She sank 1 of 2 free throws, and Hamblin grabbed the rebound and was fouled. She made both free throws. Galdeira missed three 3-pointers on the Cougars’ next two possessions.

Washington 91, Oregon 69: Kelsey Plum made 12 of 19 shots, including all seven of her free throws, and scored 35 points to power the Huskies (14-3, 3-2 Pac-12) past the Ducks (8-8, 1-4) in Eugene.

(13) Whitworth 67, Pacific 63: The Pirates (14-0, 5-0) held the Boxers (6-8, 2-3) scoreless through the final 3 ½ minutes and earned a Northwest Conference victory in Forest Grove, Oregon.

K.C. McConnell led Whitworth with 16 points, Lexie Zappone added 15 points and five assists, inlcuding two key buckets late in the fourth, and Katara Benton-Sharp had 11 points and nine boards.

CC Spokane 63, Treasure Valley 53: Jaida Burgess had 16 points and four steals and Khadija Neumeyer added 12 points and seven boards as the Sasquatch (12-6, 1-1) pulled away in the second half and claimed a NWAC win over the Chukars (8-8, 0-2) at Spokane Falls CC.
