GSL girls: Top-ranked Bullpups hold back Mead

The Gonzaga Prep girls basketball team was cruising along through three quarters before the Bullpups discovered an 18-point lead had been whittled to four.

The No. 1-ranked Bullpups finished strongly, taking a 53-46 decision over host Mead in a Greater Spokane League game Tuesday.

G-Prep registered its 37th consecutive victory.

Otiona Gildon led the Bullpups (15-0 overall, 13-0 in league) with 21 points and eight rebounds and Laura Stockton added 18 points.

Payton Douglass paced Mead (10-5, 9-4) with 12 points while Sue Winger added 11 to go with 11 rebounds.

G-Prep was taken to the limit last Thursday by Central Valley before prevailing 53-51.

Central Valley 70, Rogers 18: The visiting Bears (12-3, 10-3) opened quickly, building a 19-3 lead in the first quarter. The Pirates (1-14, 0-13) made just 1 of 18 shots from the field in the first half. Madison Hovren led CV with 15 points and the freshmen Hull twins, Lexie and Lacie, combined for 30. Makala Peterson had eight points for Rogers.

University 52, Mt. Spokane 43: The visiting Titans (10-5, 9-4) trailed 22-21 at halftime, but they caught fire in the third quarter, outscoring the Wildcats (7-8, 5-8) 22-10. U-Hi made 9 of 12 shots from the field in the third, while Mt. Spokane was 4 of 10. U-Hi’s defense caused turnovers in the decisive quarter. Brooke Bailey led U-Hi with 17 points and Kaitlin Pannell added 10. Ari Newcomb led Mt. Spokane with 11.

Shadle Park 52, North Central 45: The Indians (1-14, 1-12) led 37-33 through three quarters before the Highlanders (3-12, 3-10) took control in the fourth quarter in the Groovy Shoes game at the Arena. Shadle outscored NC 19-8 in the final period. Shyla Carr led the Highlanders with 22 points and Willow Risinger added 11. Hannah George paced the Indians with 16 and Megan Dean had 14.
