Cards to promote their top prospect

From Wire Reports

Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak confirmed Monday that outfielder Stephen Piscotty is being promoted to the Cardinals. But Mozeliak said no official roster move will be announced until today, when the Cardinals play the first of two interleague games in Chicago against the White Sox.

Piscotty, an outfielder who recently was given some first-base assignments at Triple-A Memphis, is hitting .272 with 11 home runs and 41 runs batted in for the Redbirds. He hit .288 with nine homers and 69 runs batted in last year for Memphis.

With the designated hitter available against the White Sox and two lefthanders pitching for Chicago, Piscotty would figure to see action as a DH, in the outfield or possibly at first base. Matt Holliday likely will be the designated hitter for at least one of the two games, so Piscotty more likely will turn up in the field as the Cardinals try to jump-start an inconsistent offense.

The 24-year-old right-handed hitter, a recent graduate at Stanford, was a supplemental first-round pick by the Cardinals in 2012. He will have to be added to the 40-man roster.

Cubs promote Rafael Soriano

Rafael Soriano can earn an additional $1 million based on games pitched as part of his contract with the Chicago Cubs.

The veteran reliever’s contract was selected from Triple-A Iowa, and he will earn $1,725,137 for the remaining 77 days of the season, the prorated share of his $4.1 million contract. His deal includes performance bonuses of $250,000 each for 20, 25, 30 and 35 games pitched, and $750,000 apiece for 20, 25, 30 and 35 games finished.

The 35-year-old righty agreed to a minor league contract with the Cubs on June 12 and pitched seven games at Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa.

Formerly with Seattle, Atlanta, Tampa Bay, the Yankees and Washington, Soriano has 207 career saves. He had 32 saves last season with the Nationals.

Clearing the bases

The Nationals selected the contract of RHP Abel de Los Santos from Double-A Harrisburg and optioned RHP Blake Treinen to Triple-A Syracuse. Washington also moved OF Jayson Werth from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL to make room for de Los Santos on the 40-man roster. De Los Santos was part of the trade that sent Ross Detwiler to the Texas Rangers. Nationals manager Matt Williams said the team will bring back RHP Joe Ross from the minors to start today’s game against the Mets. … The Dodgers placed catcher A.J. Ellis on the 15-day DL with right knee inflammation and recalled rookie catcher Austin Barnes from Triple-A Oklahoma City. The Dodgers needed help at catcher. Yasmani Grandal left Sunday’s game after taking a ball off his mask. X-rays were negative. Meanwhile, OF Carl Crawford joined the team and is expected to be activated today. He has been out since April 28 with a right oblique strain.
